Kick-Ass 2 Ratings & Reviews
Manuel Frangis
March 26, 2025
I just watched Kick-Ass 2 and I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. It is not as fresh or shocking as the first one, but it still delivers a brutal, funny, and weirdly emotional ride that builds on the original in a cool way. The characters grow, the stakes are higher, and the fights are just as wild. If you liked the first Kick-Ass, this one is still a great time. Aaron Taylor-Johnson returns as Dave Lizewski, aka Kick-Ass, and this time he is not the only one putting on a costume and fighting crime. After the events of the first movie, he is trying to figure out what it means to be a real hero, and he starts training with Mindy, who is trying to leave her Hit-Girl life behind. Watching them both struggle to balance their real lives and their superhero identities is what gives this movie its heart. Chloë Grace Moretz is once again awesome as Hit-Girl. She is still fierce and unstoppable, but now she is dealing with high school drama and trying to be normal, which is hilarious and kind of sad at the same time. Her scenes are some of the best in the whole movie. Watching her go from brutal vigilante to awkward teenager and back again never gets old. The new villain is The Motherf***—the same character from the first movie, but fully embracing his new dark identity**. He is ridiculous, offensive, and completely over the top, which fits the tone of the movie perfectly. He builds his own evil team to go after Kick-Ass and anyone else trying to do good. It is like a twisted version of The Avengers, and it leads to some wild moments. This movie adds a bunch of new characters, especially on the hero side. Justice Forever is a group of wannabe heroes trying to clean up the streets, led by Colonel Stars and Stripes, played by Jim Carrey. He is really good in the role even though he does not get a ton of screen time. His performance is serious, weird, and surprisingly emotional. The rest of the team is made up of oddballs and misfits, and their dynamic adds some fun new energy to the story. The action is still awesome. There are brutal fights, crazy brawls, and over the top stunts that push the limit without going full superhero CGI mode. The movie keeps that street-level grit from the first one, and the fights feel raw and personal. Hit-Girl has some amazing scenes again, and the final battle is big, messy, and satisfying. The humor is still dark and definitely not for everyone. It is crude, inappropriate, and pushes boundaries just like the first movie. Some of the jokes go a little too far or feel forced, which is why I knocked off half a star, but most of the time it works. The tone can get a bit uneven with the emotional scenes clashing with the over the top comedy, but it still holds together. I give Kick-Ass 2 4.5 out of 5 stars because it does what a sequel should do. It builds on the first movie, pushes the characters forward, and still keeps the same wild energy. It is not perfect, but it is bold, fun, and a great continuation of the story. Overall Kick-Ass 2 is a violent, emotional, and funny ride that proves this world still has more stories to tell. I had a blast watching it and it definitely holds up as a worthy sequel.

While the character development and underlying premise of this installment are far more eloquently stated than they were in the first film, Kick-Ass 2, like its characters, suffers at times from a dual identity.
Flavorwire

Chloe Grace Moretz and the character of Hit Girl are so infinitely more entertaining than the film around them, you can't help but wonder why it's not just a movie about her.
Grantland
Wesley Morris
All the wonder and surprise of the first movie is gone. It's just aping the violence in other movies and other comic books.

It rocks more than enough polished and highly engaging sequences to entice you to overlook it's minor identity crisis.

Sequel offers exactly the blend of R-rated nastiness and candy-colored action fans expect.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
It's a bumpy ride to the final heroes vs. villains melee, and the film is frequently stopped dead by meaty chunks of exposition and Kick-Ass' disquisitions about what it means to be a hero.

What was once shocking now just elicits a shrug.

The savvy wit and inspiration on display in the first film is absent in this dumbed-down, warmed over retread. Consider its ass kicked.

Compared to this lame attempt at storytelling the first Kick-Ass is a masterpiece.

Wadlow's biggest mistake is in overlooking the obvious - this movie belongs to Hit Girl. Every time she is off the screen, it's like the projector bulb fades.

"Kick-Ass 2" can't decide what it wants to be when it grows up: a vessel for unhinged vengeance and destruction or a meta-critique of those same impulses.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
Writer-director Jeff Wadlow establishes a premise and follows it without compromise, but the trail leads to a very ugly place. In the end, the journey wasn't really worth it.
USA Today

It revels in carnage while lacking the visual style and gleeful humor of the original.

There isn't anything good to say about "Kick-Ass 2," the even more witless, mirthless follow-up to "Kick-Ass."
Philadelphia Inquirer
Steven Rea
Cartoonishly violent, with blood spray, vomit spew, severed limbs, impaled torsos and more, Kick-Ass 2 has none of the punky flair of the Matthew Vaughn-directed original.
Newsday
Rafer Guzman
It's a smart, edgy, unpredictable action-comedy, the tonal opposite of overwrought sculptures like "Man of Steel."

The meta-satire hits you over the head until not just your Spidey sense is tingling.
