Good-natured veterinarian James Herriott takes a new post in a small town in 1930s Yorkshire, England. Under the guidance of senior veterinarian Siegfried Farnon , Herriott hones his skills and bedside manner as an animal healer. Life in the rural community -- for humans and animals alike -- continues at a leisurely pace, until Herriott is called to deliver a pregnant cow, just as his wife, Helen , is giving birth to their own child.
