Islands in the Stream Ratings & Reviews
Justin JNB
May 2, 2025
I was a bit disappointed to discover that this film was not filmed in the Bahamas but rather Hawaii. Such a shame as the Bahamian out Islands are outstandingly beautiful. Not withstanding, whilst the film was moderately entertaining, you have to understand it was made in 1977 which was a completely different world from 2025, so I consider it serviceable. Although, if you open the book, Hemingway‘s novel, the first couple of pages set a scene which the motion picture rather fails to capture, in my opinion. There are worst films for you to watch but if you want to have a look back Into social mores and cinematography of the mid 70s then you could do worse with this film
El Nuevo Herald (Miami)
Rene Jordan
It has some really good things and plenty of bad. Definitively, it must be watched. [Full review in Spanish]
The Barb (Atlanta)
Steve Warren
The joys of Islands in the Stream are intermittent, but there are enough of them to make the picture worth seeing.
The Times (Shreveport, LA)
Joe Leydon
Islands in the Stream is best when it centers on people instead of plot. The film is blessed with a marvelously literate script (by Denne Bart Petitclerc), and fine actors who bring that script to life.
Los Angeles Free Press
Ruth Batchelor
This semiautobiographical unfinished novel of Papa's, put together by his widow, is the best screen adaptation of any of the Hemingway works.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
Islands in the Stream is a big, strong, old-fashioned movie about that threatened species, the Hemingway Hero.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)
Ken Hanke
Uneven, but fascinating version of the Hemmingway novel with strong performances.
