Johnny Depp was very publicly trying to leave 21 Jump Street so they brought in what felt like an edgier copy. They even gave his character a spin-off series. It was cancelled after a season, but during that time Fred Dekker had a spy movie parody he wanted to make. Some studio thought that would make a good starring vehicle for Grieco, much in the same way Scott Valentine was in My Demon Lover a few years ago. Both failed and pretty much destroyed their careers. Dekker was booted from the movie and only got a story credit. The movie turned into a farce much like an early Austin Powers without the impish charm. Grieco, Linda Hunt, Gabriella Anwar, Roger Rees and more star in this mistaken identity comedy. Grieco plays a high school student on a school trip to France. He happens to have the same name as a spy who was supposed to be on the same plane. From there attempted hilarity ensues. There are some funny moments in poking holes into the spy genre and their cliches, but the movie fails at almost everything. In a way, that gives it a charm. I can’t explain what it is about this movie. It can’t just be my long time crush on Anwar. The movie is just fun fo the sake of being a cheesy, bombastic, fun movie for the sake of being fun. Watch it if you want.
