“i understand your pain.” i love how it’s shot, with moody and atmospheric lighting during the nighttime scenes and sweeping shots across the coastline and continuous shots from outside the second floor of a house down to the first floor and to a car. there’s so much intentionality behind the camera and i really wasn’t expecting this caliber of artistry from this picture. the concept of lost innocence - of friendships deteriorating through distance and trauma - is haunting in its own right and horror is the perfect medium through which an artist can explore it, but i walked away from this feeling like i watched a standard slasher. the characters aside from julie are one note (but i do still adore sarah michelle gellar’s portrayal of helen), and the actual mystique behind the masked killer and the twists that ensue from it feel underwhelming. this is an adequate at best screenplay that’s carried by the cinematography and performances. on the plus side, this cast is so hot i just might kms. also, i can now see where spongebob squarepants got its inspiration for the hash slinging slasher.

I grew up watching the first 2 "I Know What You Did Last Summer" movies and I do have a lot of nostalgia for it!! However as much as I love this first film, there are a couple of issues that I have with it. But first here's what I really like and what works in it for me: They do a really good job at creating suspense and I love how it adds tension and paranoia between the 4 main characters. The atmosphere is also very strong alongside its very good chase sequences. There's also a strong chemistry between the cast and the whole setting, and lighting really adds to the films suspense also. I love how the movie is shot and its cool visuals; it's a very good looking movie. The pacing of this first film is very good as well, it doesn't feel overly long or too short, it's paced just right and is very very watchable all the way through, I never feel bored at any point everytime I go back and watch I Know What You Did Last Summer. As much as I love it I did mention at the start of this review that I have a couple of issues with it; I think that the kills are very weak. The dialogue can feel very cliched at times. I don't find the fisherman killer reveal all of that compelling or interesting. And I don't like the ending where it's one year later and he jumps out of the shower door towards Julie at the end with the credits rolling immediately afterwards. I've never liked that ending; I thought they could have come with something a bit stronger than that, instead of your typical & tropey horror jumpscare kind of ending. Overall this is one of the best & better post Scream horror movies of that era out there tbh; even though it's nowhere near the quality & level of "Scream" but I do have a massive soft spot for I Know What You Did Last Summer!! And finally My Ratings/Scores for "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & an 8/10

I Know What You Did Last Summer is so bad, that it may have pushed itself into the so bad it's good category. I was going to give it one star but I along with most everyone else in my theater laughed a lot, though I am pretty sure that is not the reaction that they were going for. The premise of the movie itself was laughable, and the execution clunky. Most of the main cast seemed to be chosen to be eye candy (not to say they were bad actors, but they did not have much to work with). The one stand out actor (in my opinion) from the new class of over-privileged Southport residents was Tyriq Withers as Teddy Spencer. However, it was good to see the likes of Freddie Prinze Jr., his real-life bride (and my favorite all-time heroine) Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Jennifer Love Hewitt on the big screen again. Gellar does not appear on the official cast list, hence the spoiler warning. The film does attempt to explore the deeper topic of how trauma changes people, but it only grazes the subject, and the "show, don't tell" method here is overshadowed by the lackluster execution of the storytelling. The ending and mid-credit scene clearly indicate that they are attempting to set up future movies, but given how bad this was, they might be facing an uphill battle. The brand does have solid name recognition, so who knows.

Back in 1997, I Know What You Did Last Summer was a massive cinematic impact. Renting it on VHS shortly after its release was an amazing experience; for its time, it was an incredibly suspenseful and shocking slasher that kept you on the edge of your seat. However, watching it today reveals how much cinema and filmmaking have matured. While it holds great nostalgic value, the movie hasn't aged well. The plot is full of noticeable plot holes, the pacing feels off, and the practical effects—like obvious rubber dummies filling in for dead bodies—look quite poor by modern standards. A fun trip down memory lane for the nostalgia, but as a horror film under a modern lens, it feels a bit dated and predictable. It was a masterpiece for its era, but times have definitely changed.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is a spooky, fun movie perfect for a night in with friends. It's about some teenagers who get into a car accident and then get stalked by a mysterious person. The movie keeps you guessing, and the scary parts are just right—not too intense, but definitely enough to make you jump! The actors are all really good, and it's a great example of a classic 90s thriller. If you want a movie that's a little bit scary and a lot of fun, this is a great choice.

It’s not a horror classic, but it’s a decent ‘90s slasher with some iconic moments. The cast is strong, the vibe is nostalgic, and the hook-wielding killer adds some fun tension. A little predictable, a little silly — but still worth a watch if you like teen horror.
