Hostiles Ratings & Reviews
- RyezooFebruary 14, 2025This overall disappointing. I'm starting to think I just might not be a fan of director Scott Cooper. This movie opens intensely and immediately captivates its audience. There's two other thrilling sequences but everything that's in between can be a drag at times. It's very slow but strong performances from Christian Bale and Rosmend Pike paired with gorgeous cinematography kept the movie from becoming a task to watch. You can see this one at home

- Charles LondonFebruary 5, 2025The age of the western peaked many years ago but Hostiles is a fairly solid entry into the genre. It's not a perfect film. It spends much of its capital early with some very intense scenes, not the least of which is an opening that is guaranteed to grab your attention. If there's a problem, it's that the last half of the movie doesn't quite equal its promising beginning. The cinematography however is excellent throughout and Rosamund Pike gives an award-worthy performance. The story here is about a war-weary cavalry captain and an adversarial Cheyenne chief coming to terms with each other's past transgressions at the tail end of the American Indian Wars. I could nitpick the script, perhaps there was more death than needed to drive home the filmmakers' point and maybe it was just a tad drawn out, but in the end I liked Hostiles albeit just not quite as much as I thought I would after the drama of the opening scene.
