Hook

- ርልዪረAugust 30, 2025A genuine masterpiece and one of Spielberg’s best films. It’s a shame that critics attacked it simply for a controversy Julia Roberts had going on at the time the film released. The fact that the movie made nearly 5x its budget back (making over 300 million at the box office, all the way back in 1991), and is still held in very high regard by viewers today, is a testament to how great this Robin Williams classic is.

Spielberg’s direction often drowns in sentimentality and clutter, and tighter pacing with a sharper focus on Peter’s family and Neverland’s rules could have deepened the emotional impact. A more nuanced arc for Hook and less slapstick might also have strengthened the tone. Still, the cast is a delight: Robin Williams’ vulnerable warmth, Dustin Hoffman’s wicked charm, plus Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins, and the exuberant Lost Boys keep it enchantingly watchable.
