Hit the Deck Ratings & Reviews

"Hit the Deck" is MGM's lavish CinemaScope musical, designed to showcase expansive dance sequences. Despite the presence of Debbie Reynolds and Ann Miller, who delivered stellar dance routines, the film failed to resonate with me. Its storyline was unremarkable, and the musical numbers, while well-executed, didn't leave a lasting impression.
TIME Magazine
The dialogue offers few surprises... The songs are old too.
TV Guide
The familiar three-sailors-on-leave plotline gets a big shot in the arm in this musical, which features an outstanding cast, good production numbers, and nice visuals.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
It works as an amiable time killer.
Variety
Variety Staff
With the limitations, [producer Joe Pasternak] has made it a pretty picture, replete with songs from the old footlight piece, complete with new lyrics and flashy production numbers.
New York Times
It apparently has not improved with age.
