Heavy Metal Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward
July 6, 2025
Not really my thing, but I can appreciate that 12 y/o me probably would have loved this when I was growing up, especially in a pre-internet household. Some of the animation is definitely impressive for its time, but I just didn’t really vibe with the majority of these vignettes save for a few moments. It was definitely surprisingly to hear John Candy here, among a couple other recognizable voices.

A cult film receives a sterling AV transfer from Sony, while its miscalculation of a sequel makes its high-def debut on home video.

Heavy Metal didnt win any awards and the movie certainly isnt for everyone (neither is Heavy Metal 2000) but it has a certain charm that allows it to have a cult-like following.
Tilt Magazine
Stephen Silver
It's a movie full of the things teenaged boys love, including aliens, robots, and shapely naked ladies. (40th anniversary)
Cinema Crazed
Felix Vasquez Jr.
It's definitely watchable for fans that appreciate the exploitative pulp nature of the magazine set to excellent rock music.
Antagony & Ecstasy
Tim Brayton
Exemplifies the notion that the euphemism "adult material" almost exclusively denotes content which is chiefly of appeal to people other than adults.
Common Sense Media
Jeffrey M. Anderson
In 1981, this may have been state-of-the-art animation, but now it looks rudimentary, clunky, and flat. The writing, likewise, is flat.
CinePassion
Fernando F. Croce
Archly stunted and incalculably influential
Variety
Variety Staff
Initial segments have a boisterous blend of dynamic graphics, intriguing plot premises and sly wit that unfortunately slide gradually downhill.

...An unabashed crowd-pleaser. Whenever possible, it goes for the fight scene, the sex joke, the jiggly breasts...
TV Guide
It's a mixed bag, but successful in a mindless, adolescent way.
Chicago Reader
Dave Kehr
Some of the animation is first-rate, particularly in the more modest comedy segments, and even the heavy set pieces have greater flash and dazzle than anything Ralph Bakshi mustered around the same period.

Christopher Null
Anyone from the era will love it, while everyone else simply won't get it at all.
New York Times
Janet Maslin
Heavy Metal has been animated with great verve, and scored very well, with music much less ear-splitting than the title would suggest.

Asked if I wanted to see it again, I figured, why not? I would have remembered if it was really bad. But memory does play tricks.

Jeff Gilbert
Regardless of its dated stylishness (which still holds up remarkably well a decade plus later), Heavy Metal was a pioneering film in 1981 and remains a pivitol and infuential body of art today.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
A genuinely outrageous and occasionally brilliant coupling of American animation and classic early-Eighties heavy metal.
