I watched Hannie Caulder without many expectations, but it really left an impression. For a 1971 film, the idea of a woman seeking revenge and taking control of her destiny was pretty ahead of its time. The gritty setup, the raw, almost desolate Western backdrop — it all just fits the mood so well. What really stood out for me was the emotional weight it carried. It wasn’t flashy or overdone — it just let the story breathe and grow on you. Interestingly, while watching it, I couldn’t help but think of Sholay (1975). There are obvious differences in characters and setting, but the underlying tone — revenge, a lone fighter, the bandits, the emotionally scarred lead — felt quite familiar. It made me genuinely wonder: were Salim-Javed and Ramesh Sippy possibly inspired by Hannie Caulder in some way? It wouldn’t be surprising if they were. There are echoes of this film in Sholay, reimagined beautifully in an Indian context. Overall, Hannie Caulder might not be the most talked-about Western, but it has a quiet strength and a story that still resonates.

The role of Hannie isn't particularly complex, and Raquel rounds it out nicely.

... a confused hybrid pulled in all directions.

Welch will never be confused with Meryl Streep, but there's something uncharacteristically low-key and life-size about her performance in this forgotten gem. For once, it's not just her looks that kill.
