The tragic love of Orpheus and Eurydice is intertwined with the complex relationship of Hades and Persephone. Eurydice, struggling with poverty, is lured to the industrial underworld of Hadestown by Hades, while Orpheus, a struggling musician, ventures down below to bring her back. (Filmed live at the Lyric Theatre, London, featuring the core five original Broadway cast members.)

“‘if i was orpheus i would simply not turn around’ yes you would. if you were orpheus and you loved eurydice, you would. to love someone is to turn around. to love someone is to look at them. whichever version of the myth — he hears her stumble, he can't hear her at all, he thinks he's been tricked — he turns around because he loves her. that's why it's a tragedy. because he loves her enough to save her. because he loves her so much he can't save her. because he will always, always turn around. ‘if i was orpheus i would simply -‘ you wouldn't be orpheus. you wouldn't be brave enough to walk into the underworld and save the person you love. be serious.’” - a tumblr user writing absolute heat this rating is not a reflection of my feelings regarding the stage musical; that production is perfect in every way and transcends arbitrary number scores. i’m so thankful to have seen it in person, as i’ve never seen anything quite like it on stage and likely never will again, because of how singular a musical it is. it toes this balance between adaptation and original work so deftly, and the way every inch of that stage is utilized is mesmerizing. it’s easily the best show of the 2000s, and one of my favorites period. unfortunately, the pro shot leaves some things to be desired. the editing genuinely upset me at times because of how it would cut out choreography during many shots, or it would muddy the flow of scenes as it cut between cameras. there are some moments of beautiful blocking with the camera in mind that the viewer wouldn’t be privy to in person, but more often than not it felt like the lens was struggling against the subject. obviously, that didn’t stop me from inconsolably weeping. broadway legends like lea salonga and eva noblezada just cement the universal truth that filipinos rule the theater. pinoy pride baby.

Excellent musical. Not sure if it was an issue with the version I saw, but some parts had weird sound mixing, with the background music very low.

I'm blown away by how effectively this captures both the cinematic quality of a movie, and all of elements of a live theatre performance. I really like the small cutaways to the crowd, or to a pertinent instrument, always reminding us of the medium at the heart of what we're watching, but it also doesn't shy away from having bad ass shots from (way) down in the Hades-hole or right in the heart of the action as Orpheus breaks through the wall. I LOVE that this shares something in common with the other medium in which I'm most familiar with Orpheus and Eurydice, which is the video game Hades. And in both of these, the narrative embraces and utilizes the cyclical nature of itself (repeat performances in the case of the play, subsequent play attempts in the video game) to meaningful and emotional effect. Hermes performance is off the charts good. He somehow has the vibe of a veteran actor who nonetheless had no prep and just wandered up and nailed the show anyway. It's somehow meticulous and off the cuff all at once. He's incredible. Persephone pinballing between manic, depressive, and drunk strikes such a chord. Absolutely phenomenal performance. Nobody is going to have any idea what I'm talking about, but she felt like a grown up version of Elmyra from Tiny Toon's How I Spent My Vacation and I think that's the perfect energy to bring to the role. Hade's ability to still exude strength and gravitas despite the leg is impressive. I can't imagine how stressed the choreographer and crew were when he showed up day 1. It's an old song. It's a sad song. It's a love song. They're gonna sing it again, and I'm gonna damn well listen.

There are a couple of sequences (Wait for Me, Doubt Comes In) where they find ways to shoot the numbers that really elevate them and give a unique experience for this recording. I wish they had approached the rest of the production with this intent and vision. Which is not to the say the rest of it is bad, just doesn’t rise to the level of those moments.
