He made the newspapers regularly as he had been told repeatedly that he needed to arm himself for protection against the wildlife in case it was necessary, but he repeatedly refused. Because of this, wildlife officers, and well meaning pilots would regularly fly out to check on his wellbeing. It was hotly debated by all whether this man should be fined, arrested, ignored, assisted somehow, or simply respected and left alone. People felt that he was making himself an issue to others far too often. Others truly believed that he was crazy. Some believed that he simply wasn't outdoor educated. Most felt like he was a pest. Nobody felt like he actually belonged there. In the long run though, the public absolutely believed that the outcome was entirely preventable, and it probably was if he had listened.
