Admittedly, we know the subject of domestic violence from headlines, statistics, or second-hand stories, yet it is rarely shown with such ruthlessness - in stark black and white, like a hammer to the head. I approached the screening mentally prepared, and still each successive scene provokes growing unease. What we see is an evil we have heard about, witnessed, and sometimes even carry beneath our own skin, dismissing it as the “color” of a grey, drab everyday life. Once again, the director lashes out at figures of authority - police officers, politicians, businessmen - from whose suits and uniforms drunken bulldog faces quickly emerge. The film’s strongest element, for me, is its emotional portrait of breaking free from abuse: the victim’s numbness and helplessness, the abuser’s volatility, and the moral dilemmas faced by bystanders. A key scene of the protagonist’s split psyche shows how a single decision - despite fear of the unknown - can shorten the cycle of violence and genuinely improve well-being. This is not a pleasant film, but it is an extremely important one: it can give victims courage and offer perpetrators the perspective needed to change.
