God's Country Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward

If I didn’t know that Taylor Sheridan was busy creating a bazillion different TV Series, I would swear this was one of his films. This neo-western starring Thandiwe Newton is definitely a slow burn, but I felt the pace suited the material perfectly. Newton gives an outstanding performance. The film attempts to at least touch on a wide range of social issues, but the results are mixed at best. Sandra (Newton) doesn’t always exemplify sound decision making as her motives are often questionable. Still, it’s an enjoyable watch even if the ending escalates a bit beyond belief.

Julian Higgins takes this very intimate and specific story that could have been a lurid B-movie and makes it art.

It's all open spaces and yet all the action happens on Thandiwe Newton's face. It is a perfectly internalized performance.
Third Coast Review
Lisa Trifone
Higgins succeeds (to a great degree), then, because just as the film proceeds at its low-grade heat for the first two acts, it more than delivers when that fire finally explodes into something not even the stoic and controlled Sandra can keep contained.
Reel Talk with Chuck and Pam
Charles Koplinski
The subject of micro-aggressions and blatant instances of racism and sexism, this is a portrait of a woman who's reached her limit and feels there is no way to stand up for herself but in a manner she abhors.
We Live Entertainment
Aaron Neuwirth
Thanks to a powerful performance from Thandiwe Newton, this slow burn of a film proves to be quite effective and even tense when the time calls for it.
Los Angeles Times
Robert Daniels
Newton braids every thread of generational trauma into a lived-in symbol of defiance and anger.

Profound and haunting.
New York Times
Manohla Dargis
Higgins has a feel for the poetry of the landscape, and he and his cinematographer, Andrew Wheeler, make effective use of the region's majestic, sometimes eerie beauty.
AV Club

Higgins and Newton leave us with a bad taste in our mouths, and that's a good thing.

It becomes as a whole an intoxicating watch.

It's easy to dislike the bullies. Too easy. They're cliché.
Vox
Alissa Wilkinson
It's a thriller, a twisty one, and Newton is terrific in it.
Rolling Stone
David Fear
It's not perfect -- the symbolism cup overfloweth here, and don't get us started on the main character's backstory -- but Newton's performance and a palpable f----you-patriarchy righteousness pack a serious punch.
RogerEbert.com
Brian Tallerico
A film that understands both form and content, merging the two in a story that feels less like a piece of suspenseful entertainment and more like a warning.
Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack)
Ty Burr
It's a movie that keeps one eye on this local dustup and the other on a long, sorry sweep of American conquest and neglect.
TheWrap
Ronda Racha Penrice
Provocative, raising critical questions about boundaries, environmental stewardship, community, inclusion, grief and more. It is, however, a slow burn, requiring patience and attention.
IndieWire
Christian Zilko
Higgins' excellent film constantly dangles redemption in front of our faces, begging us to imagine a better world, but ultimately delivers a stark reminder of how bitterly divided the country is.
Deadline Hollywood Daily
Todd McCarthy
A disturbing, unusually class-and-race-conscious modern Western that paints a pretty despairing view of human relations in red state America.
The Hollywood Reporter
Lovia Gyarkye
[An] often exhilarating, if occasionally overcooked, film.
