Ghostlight Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Wonderful film a about a grieving family that is mired in the processing of their grief. The teenage daughter, Daisy (Katherine Mallen-Kupferer) is lashing out in school on the brink of expulsion. Her father, Dan (and father in real life, Keith Kupferer), is a typical gruff father with pent up anger and sadness, but no idea how to process or even recognize his emotions. But when Dan makes acquaintance with Rita (Dolly De Leon) and she forces him into their local production of Romeo and Juliet, Dan finds an avenue to access some of his deepest emotions that were previously out of reach and perhaps finds reconnection with his wife and daughter. Ghostlight is just a really lovely film highlighting the healing power of art and community. 🇵🇭 bias, but Dolly De Leon, once again, is an absolute delight. Directing duo Alex Thompson and Kelly O’Sullivan have crafted a heart warming, crowd pleasing, and tear jerking production. There is one narrative choice that felt a little too contrived for me to fully embrace. The source of the family’s grief mirrors a little too closely a certain tragedy in the play. To the actors’ credit, they made it work in the end. Keith in particular gives a remarkably moving performance that garnered an ovation from the crowd at SIFF. Highly recommend. And put Dolly in everything please 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
