Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Ratings & Reviews

- 匚卂尺ㄥFebruary 8, 2025"Frozen Empire" isn't necessary a bad movie, but at the same time it definitely wasn't as good or enjoyable as "Afterlife." For me, there was two main issues that spoiled the potential this sequel had. The squabbling within the Spengler family was the first, with one of the junior family members having turned into a bit of a brat, and the other a bit of an idiot. It all feels over trivial and over dramatic, while at the same time rather pointless and at odds with their characters from the first movie. I'm not sure what the overall point of it all was meant to be (other than plot-filler). As it isn't interesting enough to deliver that feel-good-everyone-and-everything-is-ok conclusion by the end of the film. Then there was the "bad-guy" who didn't turn up until well in to the second half of the movie. They spent so long building the anticipation, and making him out to be incredibly evil and powerful. But in the end, he didn't really do much other than walk about and squawk at people. Definitely an anti-climax, and a let down in this regard. Overall, a pretty average movie - with a few redeeming features (Slimer!) but not enough to save it, and it really needed something more than it produced.
- jackmeatMarch 4, 2025My quick rating - 6.5/10. Frozen Empire successfully blends nostalgic charm with fresh, exciting elements in a way that honors the original while forging a new path for the revitalized franchise. Directed by Gil Kenan, this latest installment sees the return of the Spengler family to New York City, reuniting with the iconic firehouse and the original Ghostbusters. The film manages to capture the magic of the classic while introducing innovative concepts that breathe new life into the series. For fans who fondly remember the original Ghostbusters – myself included, having first seen it at the Twin Drive-In during my junior high days – Frozen Empire is a delightful trip down memory lane. The film pays homage to its roots with familiar faces and beloved locations, while also pushing the boundaries of ghostbusting technology with a top-secret research lab that promises to take their ghost-hunting capabilities to the next level. The plot centers around the discovery of an ancient artifact that unleashes a malevolent force, threatening to plunge the world into a second Ice Age. This premise provides a thrilling backdrop for the action, bringing together both the old and new generations of Ghostbusters in a race against time to save the world. The return to New York City, with its iconic skyline and bustling streets, adds a sense of grandeur and urgency to the story. The Spengler family, led by the ever-charismatic Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace, deliver strong performances that anchor the new narrative. They are joined by the original Ghostbusters – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson – whose chemistry and camaraderie remain as infectious as ever. And let's face it, Paul Rudd is damn good in his comedic roles. The dynamic between the seasoned veterans and the enthusiastic newcomers is a highlight, offering plenty of heartwarming and humorous moments. The visual effects are top-notch, particularly in the depiction of the icy cataclysm that threatens to engulf the city. The ghost designs are both inventive and reminiscent of the original film’s charm, striking a balance that should satisfy long-time fans and newcomers alike. The action sequences are well-choreographed, blending practical effects with cutting-edge CGI to create thrilling and immersive ghostbusting adventures. One thing I really enjoyed is its ability to mix nostalgia with new ideas seamlessly. The references to the original movies are plentiful but not overbearing, and the film wisely focuses on expanding the lore and introducing new characters and challenges. The incorporation of a top-secret research lab hints at exciting possibilities for the franchise's future, setting the stage for more innovative ghost-hunting escapades. Even though I found this one to be a step down from Afterlife, this is still a fun and entertaining addition to the beloved franchise. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, this movie offers an enjoyable ride.
- neuroparadox5d agoGhostbusters 5 notes: INTRO: So, I watched this awhile ago, but I was pretty wasted and it was like 2am, so literally remember nothing about it except that the villain design was cool maybe 🤷♂️ That being said, let's see what my thoughts are now, while only being half-wasted this time! Below are my semi-sober rewatch notes, in runtime order (sans timestamps, since I don't think this movie, nor my amateur sardonic commentary, warrant it.) LETS GO: "It's freezing!" *Leaves hand there until it ices over* Basically the same as sticking your hand into lava and saying "it's burny!" lol okay, that Photon joke was....brilliant 😉 "It's the Hell's Kitchen Sewer Dragon." Which is what Jessica Jones' exes call her 🤣 💜 I wish Calgary's traffic was as light and uncongested as downton Manhattan's is! Screw the ghost, look at all that parking! That drone ghost trap is kind if cool idea and nice modernization. The Statue of Liberty thing...not sure that people would just shrug something like that off or hyper-normalize it... like it was some sort minor nuisance. That's the same day the Titanic came back Good chemistry between Coon, Rudd and Grace. Sorry but Finn Wolfsoft is more annoying than Podcast in this and has nothing to do. Yeah, just put your finger into that dripping green goo hole on the ceiling, durrrp...I guess we're lucky it wasn't on the floor, or he who knows what an adolescent boy would have stuck in it. What a real hug! 🙄 Yeesh, welcome to the nonsense exposition lab. "...equivalent of 50 million cubic hectares..." Lol that's such a nonsense, obfuscated measurement, a hectare is a unit of area not volume smfh. Just because you say cubic doesn't make it okay. This bothered me more than it should have 😂 Paul Rudd is so charming I keep thinking he's Canadian. Underage lesbian ghost romances are such a trope. Why is ghost chick walking down a street? She can fly ffs Steven Seagal looking slim in the attic scene! *Shout out to SpaceIce 😂🤣 Hahaha "The Singing Cheeses of Copenhagen" Should have named the bad guy something more memorable than Garraka. The exposition dump for the baddie's background is kind of neat, stylistically but it's allllll at once. I think visually he's cool but other than that he's boring and under-developed. The scene when he gets freed is great, not sure if he killed Lucky but I doubt it since the human body can just freeze completely and totally be okay later, fyi 🤣😂. And when he gets his horns back looked pretty great. Bill Murray thinks he spies something suspicious in a poorly-lit room and goes against every single coolness guidleline and takes OFF his sunglasses! 😎 Kumail Numjiani just nonchalantly talking to and joking with a flying, 12' tall, horned ice demon with glowing eyes instead of fear-shitting himself. 🙄 First rule of spycraft, always carry a lighter or matches. I think this franchise would be interesting if you leaned the other direction and more into horror or thriller than PG-13 family comedy....like army of darkness maybe, hell yeah give Sam Raimi's Ghostbusters?! 😍 Dare I dream? Side note: okay 20 minutes left, it's been 4 hours cause of the stop and go 🥵 Thank gosh the enemy's ice breath attack is so fucking slow and non-lethal 🙄 Wish I could tell what the bad guy was saying, "chanting" is boring and it actually seems important, like what is he saying? I know, ghosts 🙄 whatever It looks like the city is frozen already but then there are people getting coffee instead of mass hysteria 😂🤣 Everyone thaws immediately, there's no tissue damage and everyone is freshly shaved, just like in real life. Overall...Meh it's okay, I can see why there is a critic vs. audience difference on RT, it's not good but it's not bad and it's kinda fun 🤷♂️ not sure why the marshmallows boops are in it at all other than marketing I guess lol I almost said before but his MIGHT have been better as a 6-part series just to expand on the half-storylines, and more essentially, the villain, Dormammu Goro, or whateverthefuckhisnamewas. End of line. (note: I had to bowdlerize my review like 18 times because shitty plex doesn't tell you what word they've blacklisted, you gotta figure that shit out on your own because they are stupid fucks.
- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025Well that was disappointing. The charm was there, but they were never able to capture it. I really loved the previous film and it just felt like there were too many ghostbusters in the kitchen to share the screen and make a movie that had stakes or felt significant. The action was pretty bland and the baddie was lame. Also criminal trailers showcasing way too much of the movie. Maybe next time
- josi.victoriaJanuary 24, 2025It's kind of fun in a nostalgic way.
- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025Solid entry in the franchise. McKenna Grace continues to shine as a standout, it’s a great character and McKenna does an excellent job as Phoebe. Paul Rudd can do no wrong, in my book. His boyish charm is ever present and continues to be one of the best casting decisions for this franchise. Thought it was very cool to see Dan Akyroyd get a sizable role in this one. As one of the original writers, original cast, and someone that had been wanting for years to relaunch the franchise, Ray’s enthusiasm for busting ghosts on the screen felt like genuine emotion man behind the character. The film is much heavier on the callbacks to the original film. Characters, cameos, ghosts, locations….all that was a bit much this time around. Some of them feel shoehorned in more than others. Personally, my favorite nods to the original film are usually the most understated ones, a musical cue or a camera move. There’s an establishing shot of the New York Library mimics the camera move from the original. I much prefer those subtle nods to the one’s that beat you over the head. Had a really fun time. Decent action with a good balanced mix of practical and digital effects. And I think it’s a really enjoyable cast, even if it gets bogged down by having a few too many characters each with their own B plot. I would sign up for more Ghostbusters films if they made them, though. I’m ready to move on from the constant nostalgia play. Now that the franchise has been re-established it’s time to move on and tell an original story.
- Elliott AustwickJuly 13, 2025Love ghostbusters as a kid and this just has that scary ghostwriter style alot better than the one nobody mentions ever haha
- Junior ReyesJuly 21, 2025Well ! !!👎🧔♂️ Nop ! !
- Mister ArnMay 21, 2025"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is yet another installment in the Ghostbusters series. Fans of the previous films are likely to enjoy this one as well. However, it doesn't bring anything new to the table, with its most notable aspect being the homage it pays to its predecessors.
- clay.a5July 12, 2025loved the trailer definitely a must watch
- assassin007November 12, 2024Great film if you are a fan of the series.
