Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Ratings & Reviews

My quick rating - 6.5/10. Frozen Empire successfully blends nostalgic charm with fresh, exciting elements in a way that honors the original while forging a new path for the revitalized franchise. Directed by Gil Kenan, this latest installment sees the return of the Spengler family to New York City, reuniting with the iconic firehouse and the original Ghostbusters. The film manages to capture the magic of the classic while introducing innovative concepts that breathe new life into the series. For fans who fondly remember the original Ghostbusters – myself included, having first seen it at the Twin Drive-In during my junior high days – Frozen Empire is a delightful trip down memory lane. The film pays homage to its roots with familiar faces and beloved locations, while also pushing the boundaries of ghostbusting technology with a top-secret research lab that promises to take their ghost-hunting capabilities to the next level. The plot centers around the discovery of an ancient artifact that unleashes a malevolent force, threatening to plunge the world into a second Ice Age. This premise provides a thrilling backdrop for the action, bringing together both the old and new generations of Ghostbusters in a race against time to save the world. The return to New York City, with its iconic skyline and bustling streets, adds a sense of grandeur and urgency to the story. The Spengler family, led by the ever-charismatic Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace, deliver strong performances that anchor the new narrative. They are joined by the original Ghostbusters – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson – whose chemistry and camaraderie remain as infectious as ever. And let's face it, Paul Rudd is damn good in his comedic roles. The dynamic between the seasoned veterans and the enthusiastic newcomers is a highlight, offering plenty of heartwarming and humorous moments. The visual effects are top-notch, particularly in the depiction of the icy cataclysm that threatens to engulf the city. The ghost designs are both inventive and reminiscent of the original film’s charm, striking a balance that should satisfy long-time fans and newcomers alike. The action sequences are well-choreographed, blending practical effects with cutting-edge CGI to create thrilling and immersive ghostbusting adventures. One thing I really enjoyed is its ability to mix nostalgia with new ideas seamlessly. The references to the original movies are plentiful but not overbearing, and the film wisely focuses on expanding the lore and introducing new characters and challenges. The incorporation of a top-secret research lab hints at exciting possibilities for the franchise's future, setting the stage for more innovative ghost-hunting escapades. Even though I found this one to be a step down from Afterlife, this is still a fun and entertaining addition to the beloved franchise. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, this movie offers an enjoyable ride.

"Frozen Empire" isn't necessary a bad movie, but at the same time it definitely wasn't as good or enjoyable as "Afterlife." For me, there was two main issues that spoiled the potential this sequel had. The squabbling within the Spengler family was the first, with one of the junior family members having turned into a bit of a brat, and the other a bit of an idiot. It all feels over trivial and over dramatic, while at the same time rather pointless and at odds with their characters from the first movie. I'm not sure what the overall point of it all was meant to be (other than plot-filler). As it isn't interesting enough to deliver that feel-good-everyone-and-everything-is-ok conclusion by the end of the film. Then there was the "bad-guy" who didn't turn up until well in to the second half of the movie. They spent so long building the anticipation, and making him out to be incredibly evil and powerful. But in the end, he didn't really do much other than walk about and squawk at people. Definitely an anti-climax, and a let down in this regard. Overall, a pretty average movie - with a few redeeming features (Slimer!) but not enough to save it, and it really needed something more than it produced.

Well that was disappointing. The charm was there, but they were never able to capture it. I really loved the previous film and it just felt like there were too many ghostbusters in the kitchen to share the screen and make a movie that had stakes or felt significant. The action was pretty bland and the baddie was lame. Also criminal trailers showcasing way too much of the movie. Maybe next time

It's kind of fun in a nostalgic way.

Great film if you are a fan of the series.

Sometime around the eighth or ninth round of expository mumbo jumbo concerning the ectoplasmic nightmare about to happen, the movie starts moving sideways, not forward. Hate to say it, but: hold that ghost, indeed.
Austin Chronicle

Grace captures the confusions of being 15 and out of sorts, and she provides more than enough of an emotional through line to pull the film together, especially when complimented by the eternally charming Rudd.

A blunt Gen X nostalgia play -- a tribute act grinding out the oldies on a cruise ship to nowhere.

Brian Lowry
A very busy movie that lacks the emotional hook of its predecessor, while spending too much time on the wrong characters in a way that yields a rather lifeless, chilly affair.

Much better than the wobbly reboot, with plenty to delight both long-time fans and newcomers.

Other than Aykroyd, who admittedly displays a characteristic glee at being in his comfort zone here, nobody seems to want to be there or going through these motions again.

If you are a "Ghostbusters" completist, you'll want to see this, and it's just competent enough that you won't feel that your time was entirely wasted.

The new film is professionally made, well-acted, entertaining enough, and possessed of no earthly reason to exist aside from the care and feeding of intellectual property.

Gil Kenan doesn't so much shepherd a story as he does manage the "Ghostbusters" brand for 115 minutes. We get a few winks, a few ghosts, and that's about it.
Associated Press

A significant upgrade from "Afterlife," which relocated the action to Oklahoma and forgot to pack any comedy. "Frozen Empire," back, thankfully, in New York, is a breezier, more serviceable sequel that has a modest charm as an '80-tinged family adventure.
Minneapolis Star Tribune

It's tough to balance the casual vibe required for comedy to work with the effortfulness of huge special effects, but "Frozen Empire" pulls it off.

With Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, busting still makes me feel good.
New York Times

My fingers have taken to their death bed simply typing out the basics. Yet, "Frozen Empire" is an eclectic, enjoyable barrage of nonsense - a circus act that kicks off with a Robert Frost poem and climaxes with Ray Parker Jr.'s titular synth banger.
New York Magazine/Vulture
Bilge Ebiri
Frozen Empire isn't nearly as glacial or tepid as Afterlife, but it does suffer from a similar desire to drown us in Easter eggs.
FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles)
Peter Rainer
There's a lot of self-referential backslapping throughout the film, but overall the problem is that there's too much going on. It's like the filmmakers couldn't figure out what story to tell, so they just threw everything into the mix.
