Ghost Trail Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward
July 1, 2025
Spy drama that follows Hamid (Adam Bessa), who has joined a covert task force that hunts down fugitive war criminals. Having been tortured himself in a Syrian prison several years prior, Hamid soon zeroes in on a man he believes to be his former captor. This was a gripping character drama as Hamid struggles to process his trauma. Are Hamid’s memories of his captor reliable or is he just desperate to find a target for his vengeance? The film does an excellent job of maintaining the ambiguity for a time. And when Hamid comes face to face with his suspect (Tawfeek Barhom), the interaction between them is riveting. Recommend
Arts Fuse
Steve Erickson
The fact that so much of its dialogue is relegated to voice-over, heard over images of Hamid walking or riding on buses, enhances the powerful impact made by his alienation from himself and others.
RogerEbert.com
Christy Lemire
An intimate study of trauma that plays with the gripping suspense of a globetrotting spy thriller.

Mark Dujsik
Ghost Trail is an effective thriller, to be sure, but mostly because it's one with an overwhelming sense of regret and an active conscience.
Wall Street Journal
Zachary Barnes
Mr. Bessa's performance is a pained and bitter thing, his character committed to some form of justice even if the attempt to get it keeps him submerged in a traumatic past...
New York Times
Beatrice Loayza
Jonathan Millet's "Ghost Trail" takes a mostly conventional approach to this [crime thriller] blueprint, in which a protagonist loses his head (and his humanity), but it offers a novel context: the Syrian refugee crisis.
Fish Jelly Films (YouTube)

Ghost Trail is an impressive narrative feature debut, blending mystery and intrigue into a quiet character study.
Always Good Movies
Filipe Freitas
Eschewing physical violence in favor of mounting psychological tension, this debut signals the arrival of a filmmaker discovering his power.
Loud and Clear Reviews
Joseph Tomastik
A solidly made, respectably tactful, and occasionally well written movie, but I'd be lying if I said I was fully engaged the entire way through.
Slant Magazine
Marshall Shaffer
Jonathan Millet's film is unconvincing and unnaturally contorted into its shape.
NYC Movie Guru
Avi Offer
A spellbinding, intelligent and engrossing psychological thriller.
Asian Movie Pulse
Panos Kotzathanasis
"Ghost Trail" is an excellent work and a truly promising debut, just a few steps short of being a masterpiece. Jonathan Millet is certainly a director to watch.
Film Inquiry
Wilson Kwong
Based on true events, Jonathan Millet's Ghost Trail (Les Fantômes) is an enthralling political thriller that seethes with tension.
InSession Film
Hector A. Gonzalez
Jonathan Millet's feature-length debut Ghost Trail (Les fantômes) is a neatly crafted film that explores the psyche of a Syrian refugee via a spy-genre model.
Next Best Picture
Max Borg
It's a quietly thrilling spy film that remembers the genre is primarily about people rather than gadgets and explosions.
Variety
Jessica Kiang
If the best revenge is living well, it is a truism that has not yet taken root for Hamid (a riveting Adam Bessa), the dark, scarred heart of Jonathan Millet's brooding, gripping Ghost Trail.
The Film Stage
Ankit Jhunjhunwala
Ghost Trail leaves a lasting impression, especially from its redemptive ending where choices are made that reward the audience's emotional and moral investment.
Deadline Hollywood Daily
Damon Wise
Ghost Trail isn't exactly thrilling, certainly not in the manner of a John le Carré novel. Closer in spirit to Spielberg's Munich, it's a quietly profound character study about the need for a closure that may never come.
IndieWire
Christian Zilko
[Jonathan Millet and Adam Bessa's] combined efforts allow the film to marry some of the best aspects of spy thrillers and slow cinema in a portrait of the ways that wars haunt us long after we escape them.
Moveable Fest
Stephen Saito
In reflecting a fragmented experience in which pieces will always be missing, the filmmaker inventively constructs a powerful whole.
