Gaia Ratings & Reviews
- Patrick WaiMarch 23, 2026I had such high hopes for this movie. It starts strong: beautifully shot, atmospheric, genuinely eerie, with intriguing quasi-scientific ideas, Biblical undertones, and the added texture of hearing characters slip into Afrikaans. For a while, Gaia feels smart, unsettling, and almost believable in its madness. Then it completely runs out of steam. The story loses momentum halfway through, keeps teasing something bigger, and never delivers a satisfying payoff. The ending is so vague and undercooked that I actually had to look up an explanation afterward. Yes, there were clues — like Stefan being immune — but they were so obscure that they barely registered while watching. If the audience has to do homework after the movie ends just to understand what it was trying to say, that is not depth. That is sloppy storytelling. What makes it even more frustrating is that the raw materials were all there for a much better film. Instead, it kills off the two best actors, Rockman and Nel, and leaves the emotional burden to Van Dyk, who is unfortunately the weakest performer in the cast. In retrospect, that role was miscast entirely. It needed someone who could communicate much more without dialogue, and he simply could not carry that weight. So in the end, Gaia is a beautiful near-miss: great atmosphere, interesting ideas, weak execution, and a finale that asks for far more generosity than it deserves. A gorgeous eco-horror undone by a limp script, a weak final stretch, and a miscast key role.
