- Scott SmithMay 30, 2025I read a lot of H.P. Lovercraft horror stories and novels as a kid. This is the first movie I saw that was based on his writing (there have been several others since). It looks dated now without CGI, because it used practical special effects (rubber masks, fake limbs, lots of slime, etc.) but it still holds up OK because the story is good. I loved this movie when it first came out, and I still enjoy it for the nostalgia. One of horror director Stuart Gordon's best movies. Also see his movies 'Re-Animator' and 'Castle Freak'.
