Portugal, in the 1850s. The writer Camilo Castelo Branco and his friend José Augusto fall in love with the two daughters of an English officer, Marie and Fanny "Francisca" Owen. However, their respective preferences do not match those of the ladies, as Fanny only has eyes for José Augusto, while Camilo desires her. The novelist has to watch as his friend first seduces Fanny and then leaves her because his feelings have cooled.
