- Hakihikohá 7 diasThe One You Weren't Looking For Working Title making another British campus rom-com feels almost like a genre obligation at this point, but "Finding Emily" earns its place in that lineage rather than just coasting on it. Alicia MacDonald's debut feature has the warm, slightly scruffy charm of the best late nineties romantic comedies, the kind that trusted its characters to be funny without needing to explain the jokes, and that instinct turns out to be the film's greatest asset. Angourie Rice is doing genuinely lovely work here. She brings a dry, quietly observational intelligence to her character that keeps things grounded whenever the premise starts leaning into its more farfetched turns, and her comic timing is sharp without ever feeling performed. Spike Fearn is a discovery, carrying the romantic lead with a loose, slightly bumbling sincerity that is very easy to root for, and the chemistry between the two of them develops gradually in a way that actually feels earned rather than engineered. Minnie Driver shows up and slots in with the kind of effortless authority that makes you wish she had more to do. The cinematography is unflashy but warm, Morgan Kibby's score breezy and well chosen, and the Manchester campus setting gives the whole thing a lived-in texture that keeps it from feeling like a postcard. Rachel Hirons' script is at its best when it lets the characters bounce off each other naturally, finding humor in situation and personality rather than setup and punchline. There's also a light but genuine undercurrent about self deception and what we project onto other people that gives the romance a little more weight than the premise initially suggests. Where it wobbles slightly is in some of the more conventional genre checkboxes, a few of which feel obligatory rather than organic, and the third act leans a little harder on formula than the smarter earlier passages would lead you to expect. Still, for a film this openly committed to the pleasures of old fashioned romantic comedy, it delivers with real warmth and a refreshing lack of irony. A genuinely enjoyable time.
- Arthur9 de julho de 2026Finding Emily is an almost perfect movie if you're looking into a throwback romcom that makes you yearn for early Y2K and british romcoms with Hugh Grant, you end up liking all characters and wish there was more of them by the end. The reason I give it 4.5/5 is bc there are some characters that are used as gags without much explanation and end up confusing you a bit, but all the other parts of the movie are pretty much perfect, from the directing, the cinematography, the cast, the soundtrack, it's an almost pitch perfect romcom! Everyone in the cast are fairly new faces, the leads actually were in opposite ends of superhero franchises before, Spike Fearn as a vandal in The Batman and Angourie Rice as Betty in the Tom Holland Spiderman movies! So that's a fun fact for you! Anyways, Finding Emily is a great time and even better if you watch it with someone else! Really recommended! Also, stay for the mid credits scene!
- SirMonkalot5 de julho de 2026A fun yet predictable rom com that follows the same formula as most rom coms. What I found that made this one stand out was the actors and the setting. I’m a sucker for the UK and I love that this takes place in Manchester. Angourie Rice & Spike Fearn were great lead actors and I find they had awesome chemistry. Definitely an entertaining and enjoyable watch!

It has a warmth and sincerity that make it easy to connect with, leaving you with the feeling that the world could be a little better if more people acted the way its characters aspire to. Its greatest strength is how sweet and heartfelt it is without feeling overly cynical. It’s the kind of movie that leaves you smiling and hopeful. That said, I wasn't entirely satisfied with how everything is resolved in the final act. The ending feels a little too convenient and doesn't carry the same emotional weight as the journey that leads up to it. Even so, it's a charming and genuinely heartwarming film whose optimism is its greatest asset.
