Joe Hardcastle has a popular cheese business that is thriving, his employees love him, and he and his wife are able to live comfortably. However, when his daughter Helen comes home from a finishing school, he notices that she has changed into a wannabe posh lady. The day she returns, she announces that her friend from school has invited her to her parents' home, and she will leave the very next day. Mr. and Mrs. Hardcastle are disappointed that she must leave again so soon, but then Mrs. Fitzwilliam calls up and invites them to her home as well, to which they heartily accept. But ulterior motives become evident on both sides: Helen wishes to visit because her friend's brother Philip Fitzwilliam has caught her eye, and Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam scheme to get the Hardcastles' money by arranging an engagement between Philip and Helen.
