Eyes Wide Shut Ratings & Reviews
- MikeOctober 11, 2024Eyes Wide Shut is a mysterious and dreamlike film that extracts curiosity out of the viewer "No dream is ever just a dream." Just like any other Stanley Kubrick film, Eyes Wide Shut has beautiful cinematography. The strong color contrast and strong compositions, combined with the nervous making score, result in a technically great and mysterious film. For me everything in the film evolved around the ritual scene, which is the key moment. The haunting song ‘Masked Ball’ by Jocelyn Pook makes it even better. The shots of the masked characters after the ritual are really powerful. The shots visualize multiple strong emotions, with a beautiful golden section composition, while maintaining a static image. The camera doesn’t move, the masked characters don’t move and the masks don’t have movement in their facial expressions. Yet the facial expressions of the masks are all very exaggerated and therefore very present, which moves the focus to the strong emotions on the masks. This focus gets further enhanced due to the close-up shots, black clothing and intimidating blocking of the masked characters that are breaking the fourth wall. This gives the viewer the impression the masked characters are looking at them from within their comfortzone. Letterboxd: Mike_v_E
- Mister ArnMay 18, 2025A solidly made film with some marvelous scenes and an interesting use of the piano in the soundtrack. However, I didn't enjoy the story, but I definitely liked the movie's last line.

- CharlotteCOSMICOctober 15, 2024Not great, but not terrible either. Quite flat really.. watching that film was like a bunch of sheltered posh people read some seriously out of date pagan mythology books and thought 'Ooooo, let's do that for our get together', as if their weren't around during the very horny and very casual 60s/70s/80s.
- mickerdooJuly 5, 2025Sexy, scary and wonderfully designed. Bill can't escape the lust (good or bad). Kidman was directed too slow on dialogue. Dynamic coloring.
- 0 1June 29, 2025Eyes Wide Shut, is a sharp social critique. The film peels back the veneer of wealth and privilege to expose the moral decay, hypocrisy, and self-inflicted turmoil within high society. the film has exceptional cinematography and film score . shot on Kodak 5298 film stock, which enhances its rich, atmospheric visuals. Kubrick’s meticulous approach, using practical lighting (lamps, candles, neon signs) and expressionist set design, create an immersive, dreamlike world. Beyond its technical side, the film delves into profound philosophical and societal questions, making it deeply rewarding for viewers who appreciate thought-provoking cinema. Eyes Wide Shut doesn’t just tell a story; Kubrick forces the audience to confront questions: How much of our lives are performative? Who truly holds power in society? Can we ever fully know/trust our partners or ourselves? This is one of Stanley Kubrick's best films. some of the Plex reviewers can't seem to handle mature topics in movies. They prefer hollywood tropes
- BrendleFlyJune 28, 2025Eyes Wide Shut? More like Eyes Wide Shit.
- Rowan KrzysiakJanuary 31, 2025If you're looking for Space Odyssey or even Clockwork Orange levels of Kubrick flair you're not gonna find it here. It's a fairly grounded direction of a rather dreamlike narrative. As a complex and layered look at the sex lives and desires of a married couple it is generally an uncomfortable watch but one that is likely to flicker in your thoughts every now and then from the end credits onward whether you're prepared to admit it or not.
