- Hipster ZOMBIEJanuary 24, 2025Hilariously bad. The fact this isn’t up for all the razzie awards this year shows the Academy are trying to make a political statement by nominating this for 13 awards. The pacing is weird, the songs are hilariously bad and Selena Gomez delivers one of the most unintentionally funny performances of the year. If I could give it no stars I would.
- sopula2d agoI’m not sure that the intended message from the creators was received, definitely hard to work out. Which i dont think is a bad thing Not very pleasant experience, although i would say it succeeds as a opera/operette with its seemingly insane and hard to sympathise with protagonist who’s massive ego leads to tragedy being that its a musical it lacks a lot of subtlety. Perhaps overly ambitious?? I’m glad i watched it Also maybe 13 oscar nominations is too many.
- Carl ZMay 19, 2025The story was confusing to follow.
- AntoineApril 20, 2025Woke movie, disgusting
- Amr ZalatApril 2, 2025Awful script, bad writing, aimless plot. Total waste of time.
- Ensamhetens-biografMarch 26, 2025Brilliant I will re watch it!
- jasonmbergmanFebruary 24, 2025Pick a lane. Besides the awkward cinematic breakups the only reason I knew it was musical was the italicized subtitles. Saldana did a solid job is why it got a full star.
- PastorFebruary 14, 2025don't waste your time, listen to a merzbow album twice and read myra breckinridge all the way through, its basically the same thing
- Scott SmithFebruary 11, 2025I really hated this movie and gave up on it halfway through. The musical numbers were so bad and awkward, and the story in general was ridiculous. It was definitely unique and unusual, but in all the wrong ways.
- rg9400November 23, 2024I feel like someone is playing a joke on me because this is barely a coherent movie, let alone a potential Oscar contender. First thing is first, this movie is a full-blown musical. Maybe it's on me for not realizing that, but none of the buzz surrounding this movie really highlighted that aspect. I am not opposed to musicals as such, but the first half of this movie is almost constantly characters breaking into song. The second half has a few more natural scenes of action and dialogue, but a lot of this movie is not that. All the dialogue is delivered in this breathy whisper and staccato rhythm, even if there isn't a dance scene involved. The result is that the movie never truly feels naturalistic. Indeed, the musical numbers are often very exaggerated in terms of choreography, with very jerky and extreme movements. The camerawork is also extremely stylized, swiveling dramatically through the dance with flashy cinematography and lighting. Honestly, it can look excellent at times. However, it's impossible to engage with the movie properly due to how immersion-breaking all the songs are. This isn't endemic to all musicals. Often times, the lyrics in the songs are heartfelt and deep, the choreography aiming for a certain type of visual storytelling. In attempting to be so bold and audacious with its stylization, the movie eschews focusing on this type of storytelling. The dialogue is laughably bad, and the choreography is not aligned with the characterization or plot of the movie at all. Zoe's acting as Rita might be well-done, but I barely understood Rita's motivations or struggles. The movie is attempting to make some sort of message surrounding criminal violence in Mexico, but it's completely lost. Most alarmingly, it feels like the trans message within the movie almost feels as if the movie is treating a trans awakening as a way to escape your old life less than an actual identity struggle for the main character. I do think the movie does have some interesting concepts around Emilia's personal struggles with her prior family, but it struggles to make the viewer care. If you want to watch a bunch of admittedly well-shot music videos, this might be an okay watch for you. However, if you are looking for a good story or characters or themes, I would look elsewhere.
- FrancesFebruary 4, 2025I have so many questions: Why oh why didn't they hire a Mexican cast? Why didn't they film in Mexico? Why is it nominated for so many awards? Who is making these decisions? I guess we'll never know... I honestly tried to give this movie a chance for what (I think) it was trying to be but I just can't get over how cringey the Spanish is, the dialogue and the pronunciation. Yikes! Who talks like that????
- MeghannBFebruary 10, 2025A real mixed bag. As I say when my son's soccer team sets up a play but doesn't finish in goal, it was just a "good idea." So many moments in the film captured intense emotion and controversial topics, but simultaneously watered each other down. Zoë Saldaña is an incredible talent and brings a unique energy to the role-- she is so captivating to watch. The attempt at weaving in unexpected musical numbers throughout was ambitious and interesting, but ended up being more of a "good idea" than an actual win. Given the hype I wanted more from the movie. But I champion filmmakers and actors taking risks, so I appreciate the film from that perspective.

- VarunNovember 21, 2024The premise is so wild but unfortunately the movie didn’t succeed in doing anything interesting with it. Emilia’s switching between a soft and terrifying personality throughout was the only engaging part of the film. She is a nuanced character but I feel like the constant showcasing of her hypocrisy eventually caricatured her and made her development way less interesting. Rita and Jessi are boring characters that don’t seem to have any agency of their own. For a musical, I expect way more visual style but instead the movie just looks dull with a very bland colour tone. Some of the songs felt unneeded, others were decent, but none made any lasting impact on me or was rememberable (language barrier probably contributed to this too). I think Emilia should’ve been thrust into more challenging situations that forced her to deal with her previous life in crime, there just didn’t seem to be any big or riveting plot in the second half. A musical with a premise like this had lots of potential but ended up being quite mediocre and it took me to a few days to finish it because nothing about it was captivating.
