Earth Mama Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward
July 2, 2025
Earth Mama is an understated and authentically presented drama that finds Gia (Tia Nomore) fighting to reclaim her two children from foster care and pregnant with a third. Single and with no familiar support aside from the community around her, she faces mounting pressures from all sides to stand up and do right by her kids, while bureaucracies, addiction, poverty and the other harsh realities of life stack up against her. Wonderful direction from Savannah Leaf that keeps the drama rightfully grounded. Nomore really impressed me as well in her debut feature.
Washington Post
Omari Daniels
In Leaf's evenhanded telling, there are no perfect options - only a menu of imperfect ones.
Culture Mix
Carla Hay
Earth Mama has very impressive acting performances, but it doesn't offer any new ideas. It over-uses tiresome negative stereotypes of Black women as drug-addicted single mothers, while the diversity of Black women is muted or ignored in this movie.
HollywoodChicago.com
Patrick McDonald
The performances, especially Tia Nomore as Gia, are grounded and unsentimental in a way that produces a more compelling narrative. There was a nice emphasis on others willing to reach out and help, which generated hope in a seemingly no-hope scenario.
Third Coast Review
Steven Prokopy
A defiant act of vulnerability, and a plea to be given the smallest of breaks in a life that seems heartlessly devoid of them.

I love the way this is constructed: she makes you work hard to empathize with these women... But she gets you there.

I was blown away by this film. Incredibly powerful.

"Earth Mama" is an unflinching, authentic portrait of when motherhood, sisterhood, and womanhood converge with class and race.
Los Angeles Times
Justin Chang
If the filmmaking feels poetic and subdued, it's the opposite of coy. Leaf is confident enough to let her images, as much as her written dialogue, do much of the narrative lifting.
New York Times
Manohla Dargis
The film is intimate, modestly scaled and often so outwardly unassuming that you might not at first notice its artistry.
Rolling Stone
David Fear
Savanah Leaf's slice-of-life movie is full of these revelatory moments -- sometimes lyrical, sometimes gritty, often swirling the two together
San Jose Mercury News
Randy Myers
It's an evocative debut that immerses the audience into the reality of someone well deserving of our attention, and compassion.
The New Yorker
Richard Brody
Leaf dramatizes Gia's conflicts in scenes of trenchant dialogue... which give voice to the multigenerational traumas of Black families torn apart for political purposes.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
"Earth Mama" raises the expectation that it's a portrait, not just of an issue, but of a person, and in most ways, it lives up to that.
Slant Magazine
Gregory Nussen
Despite Earth Mama's bleak subject matter, it exudes a beatific warmth, in large part because Leaf takes remarkable pains to dramatize a web of solidarity between a group of Black women alongside her depiction of the very system that disenfranchises them.
RogerEbert.com
Nick Allen
A wildly confident debut that displays Leaf's great control of performances and cinematography.
The Hollywood Reporter
Lovia Gyarkye
A delicate stunner.
TheWrap

"Earth Mama," therefore, demands viewers witness. And what viewers see is... unmistakable beauty...
Variety
Peter Debruge
"Earth Mama" offers a nuanced take on the proverbial notion that it takes a village to raise a child.
