Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Ratings & Reviews
- Manuel FrangisApril 8, 2025I just watched Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and I give it 3 out of 5 stars. I have never played the board game, so I went into this one with zero expectations. I was just hoping for a fun fantasy adventure that would not be too confusing for someone who has no idea how the game works. For the most part, it delivered. It is lighthearted, funny, and full of action, but it also felt a little uneven in a few spots. The good news is that you definitely do not have to know anything about Dungeons and Dragons to enjoy the movie. It does not feel like it is gatekeeping the audience or throwing out a bunch of references you need to understand. It is just a fantasy adventure with magic, monsters, and a group of unlikely heroes trying to save the day. If you like that kind of setup, there is stuff here to enjoy. Chris Pine plays the main character, and he brings a lot of charm and personality to the role. He is kind of a smart talker with a good heart, and that balance works. He is not your typical strong silent hero, but that is what makes him fun to watch. Michelle Rodriguez plays the muscle of the group, and she is awesome. She has a lot of great action scenes and brings some dry humor that helps ground everything when it starts getting too silly. The rest of the team is made up of interesting characters with different magical abilities and backstories. There is a young sorcerer who is still figuring out his powers, a shape shifter who can turn into animals, and a mysterious paladin who takes everything very seriously. Their personalities bounce off each other well, and a lot of the comedy comes from how different they all are. Visually, the movie looks great. The sets, costumes, and creatures are all fun and colorful. It does not try to look super realistic. It leans into the fantasy style and embraces the weirdness, which works for this kind of story. The special effects are solid, especially during some of the bigger magical scenes and fights. Where the movie kind of loses me is the pacing. There are a few slow stretches where not much is happening, and the story feels like it is dragging. Some of the jokes also feel a little forced, like they were trying too hard to be funny in every single scene. It has its funny moments for sure, but not all of them land. There were a few times where I just wanted it to move things forward instead of stopping for another punchline. The villain is fine but not super memorable. The movie does not really go that deep into their motivations, and that makes the final showdown feel a little underwhelming. It is not bad, but it could have been more intense with better build up. I give Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 3 out of 5 stars because it is fun and creative, but not something I would rush to watch again. It has a good cast, cool visuals, and a few great moments, but it never fully pulled me in the way I hoped it would. Overall Honor Among Thieves is a decent fantasy movie with charm, laughs, and solid action. I had a good time watching it, even if I never played the board game.

- GreyCatFluffJanuary 22, 2025The most faithful adaptation of D&D short of actual-play podcasts. You can see that a lot of care and love went into its production. Truly the quintessential D&D movie of our time.
- jihadrahmeFebruary 24, 2025Not a bad movie. Entertaining especially that it is not a short movie.
