- Moon Man14. december 2025Thanks to Animal Bollywood can express RAW cinema in a Quentin Tarantinoesque way without focusing on dafEEt. ISI/ ISIS/ Israel.. pEEp. Dhurandhar, a political entertainer with a dramatic Godfather trope engaging its audience from start to finish with exceptional performance by every member of its cast and there's a subtle nod in the end to JB (not 007).

- rg940019. februar 2026I have been fairly disillusioned by Indian movies for some time now, but RRR broke that for me, highlighting the power of mixing cinematic craft with masala to create magic. With the amount of buzz and hype around Dhurandhar, I thought they might have captured that lightning in a bottle again. Unfortunately, I think they did not in numerous ways. I'm going to start by putting aside the story and political aspects to just focus in on the technical areas. This movie desperately wants to be stylish. There are 10 chapters, each with poetic subtitles. At times, the dialogue becomes flashy captions on the screen. There are numerous over the top gory deaths. In a lot of ways, more than RRR, it reminded me of John Wick. I think this movie was trying to emulate that, not just in terms of the macho hero or the testosterone-induced action sequences but also just the stylistic choices. The clear differentiator is the level of skill. John Wick is effortless, fluid and slick, cool in its unassumed set pieces. Dhurandar tries to go over the top everywhere. Edits are chaotic and way too fast, characters randomly enter slo-mo and at other times get sped up, colors look washed out, and the deaths are so gory that it is almost absurd and funny at times. It tries so hard that it crosses that border from cool to cheesy so many times. Like there is a sequence where in middle of a shootout, the movie does slo-mo to showcase Ranveer Singh flipping his hair back, something so silly that I actually couldn't stop laughing. In RRR, even if there were ridiculous moments, the movie always tried to look good. I can remember specific scenes where the camera would tilt or flip, where the colors would pop, or where the music was perfectly timed to the movements on the screen. Dhurandar has none of that. Outside of the shock factor in some of the violent scenes, I cannot recall any specific imagery or sequence. At one point, I swear I thought I was watching a car commercial with how saturated the green screen background became. The soundtrack is actually pretty good and one of the few technical highlights, but it comes in and out so chaotically in the movie. These are good songs to listen to outside of the movie, but they don't mesh with the actual scenes to make a full audiovisual impact, outside of one meme-worthy moment. I have to talk about the acting. It's also super cheesy. Akshaye Khanna's facial expression is more or less just constant twitching. At least he is able to emote. Ranveer Singh is a cardboard cutout, with his stilted dialogue often feeling like a table read. I think the standard in Bollywood is pretty low, where the movies are so driven by star power that they often feel centered around actors instead of characters. I think here the cast are not only playing their usual roles, so maybe people want to heap praise. However, this is not great acting. In terms of the story, I honestly went into this really interested. Even the negative reviews surrounding this movie hyped up a geopolitical thriller that detailed a decade plus of Indian history, albeit from a very biased lens. This movie barely has any of that. The majority of this movie is similar to any other gangster movie that you might have seen. The interconnection to historical events and the real-life footage is minimal, often serving to drum up propaganda than to actually further the narrative or the character arcs. In fact, the story and its masquerading as a "Based on Real Events" story are so divorced from each other that by the end of the movie, without even Googling anything, I knew that 99% of this movie was made up. It's just so clearly not realistic. The idea that a spy would somehow become so entangled in gang politics or would be doing so many things that would gather way too much unwanted attention is ridiculous. There is maybe a 30-second window in which the character is actually worried he will be discovered. Beyond that, he just goes about doing crazy things that do not seem feasible at all. If you're looking for that type of high-tension cat and mouse cloak and dagger storyline, I would highly recommend The Departed or Infernal Affairs instead. Granted, the movie's gang storylines are actually kind of interesting at times. It's just dragged down by all this baggage surrounding the political propaganda and also the romance. I can't disparage the romance in this movie enough. Not only is it extremely icky, it also is completely unbelievable. The two leads have no chemistry (which makes sense since Ranveer Singh is twice the age of Sara Arjun), and how and why both characters choose to pursue this romance despite all the red flags not to is also mind-boggling. Finally, this movie is half a movie. Despite being an absurd 3.5 hours long, it still manages to end in an abrupt manner, with a final act that is just action sequences and no catharsis, failing to tie up any of the threads in satisfying ways. I think the middle of this movie was actually decent and engaging, so it's such a shame that they are trying to milk it with a sequel that was already ready to go by the time this one was released. At the end of the day, Dhurandar is going to make a lot of money for a Bollywood movie. However, that's the problem. Bollywood is stuck inside a time capsule, an echo chamber where they keep repeating their formulas and templates without looking outside or learning from what others are doing with film. The argument is that is what their audiences want. Maybe that is true, but Bollywood movies, despite sometimes having record box offices, never actually make a dent in the global box office. RRR showcased the possibilities when a director looks beyond just what has been done in the past, when they actually focus and hone their technical craft. Dhurandar is not that, even if it might have had that lofty ambition initially. Instead, it is just a messy, overlong, gratuitously violent, cheesy masala movie propped up by political propaganda.
- Afrin Tisha7. februar 2026I am amazed to see the fighting/blood scenes. It felt so real and hats of to the prosthetic and VFX team. The movie is rich in music and quality acting. Also the romantic side got decent amount of focus. Still found some plot holes but overall it's a "Must Watch". Will be waiting for "Dhurandhar 2".
