Despicable Me 3 Ratings & Reviews
- RyezooFebruary 15, 2025More of the same, but way less enjoyable this go around. This film attempts to accomplish too much and bites off more then it can chew. Really hated the brother aspect. Loved Trey Parkers villain but at the the end he becomes the b-story. The humor also wasn't as strong. I still have faith in this franchise and don't entirely hate the minions yet.
- Manuel FrangisMarch 19, 2025I just watched Despicable Me 3 again and I would give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It is still a fun and entertaining movie but it does not quite reach the level of the first two. The humor and action are there but the story feels a little less fresh this time around. That being said there are still plenty of great moments that make it worth watching. The movie picks up with Gru adjusting to his new life as a family man and a member of the Anti Villain League. But things take a turn when he is fired from his job and finds out he has a long lost twin brother Dru. The twin storyline adds a fun new dynamic but it does not feel as strong as the family themes from the previous movies. Steve Carell is still fantastic as Gru. His voice performance is just as funny and full of personality as ever. Adding a twin brother gives him a new challenge to work with and Carell plays both roles in a way that makes their interactions fun. Dru is a completely different character from Gru and while he is not as memorable he adds some entertaining moments. The girls Margo Edith and Agnes are still great but they do not have as much to do in this one. Their moments are cute and funny but they feel more like a side plot compared to the first two movies. Agnes still has some adorable moments but her storyline feels a little rushed. The Minions are once again all over the place bringing their usual chaotic humor. If you love them you will still have fun watching their antics but at times it feels like they were thrown in just for extra laughs rather than being part of the main story. Their side adventure is funny but does not add much to the overall plot. One of my favorite parts of the movie is Trey Parker as the villain Balthazar Bratt. It is crazy and hilarious that they got the co creator of South Park to be in a Despicable Me movie and he is actually one of the best parts of it. Balthazar Bratt is a former 80s child star turned supervillain and his entire character is built around 80s nostalgia. From his dance moves to his soundtrack to his ridiculous outfit everything about him is over the top in the best way. He is funny entertaining and has some of the best moments in the movie. The animation is as bright and colorful as ever. The action sequences are big and fun to watch and the movie moves at a fast pace that keeps things from getting boring. The soundtrack also adds a lot of energy with some great 80s music moments thanks to Balthazar Bratt. The biggest issue with Despicable Me 3 is that it does not feel as fresh as the first two. The storyline with Gru and Dru is fun but does not feel as emotional or engaging as Gru’s journey in the earlier movies. The humor is still good but some jokes feel a little too predictable this time around. It is entertaining but it does not hit as hard as the previous films. That being said it is still a fun movie with plenty of laughs. The action is solid the characters are still likable and the villain is one of the best in the series. It may not be as strong as the first two movies but it is still an enjoyable watch especially if you are a fan of the series. Despicable Me 3 is a fun sequel but not a standout. It has its moments and it is a good time but it does not quite capture the magic of the first two movies. It is worth watching for the laughs and action but it is not one that sticks with you as much as the others. I had fun watching it but it is not a movie I would rush to rewatch.
