Despicable Me Ratings & Reviews
- Ddoughnut6d agoI swear, the 5th movie needs to have Gru take control of an orphanage
- Manuel FrangisMarch 19, 2025I just watched Despicable Me again and it is an easy 5 out of 5 stars. This movie is the perfect mix of comedy heart and pure fun. It is the kind of animated film that works for both kids and adults with great characters sharp humor and a surprisingly touching story. The premise is simple but unique. Gru is a supervillain with big plans to steal the moon but things take an unexpected turn when three orphaned girls enter his life. That setup alone creates plenty of hilarious and heartwarming moments and the way the story unfolds keeps you entertained the whole time. Steve Carell is amazing as Gru. His voice performance is absolutely perfect giving Gru a mix of gruffness sarcasm and unexpected warmth. He makes the character feel larger than life while also giving him real depth. You start off seeing him as a coldhearted villain but as the movie goes on you begin to see another side of him and that transformation is what makes the movie so special. The three girls Margo Edith and Agnes are just as important to the story. Each one has their own personality that makes them stand out and their interactions with Gru create some of the best moments in the movie. Agnes especially steals the show with her adorable and hilarious one liners. The dynamic between Gru and the girls is the heart of the movie and it is what makes this more than just another animated comedy. Then of course there are the Minions. They are absolutely hilarious bringing nonstop energy to every scene they are in. Their silly language chaotic behavior and slapstick humor make them some of the funniest animated side characters ever. They add so much personality to the movie and even though they are completely ridiculous they never feel out of place. The animation is bright colorful and full of personality. Every scene pops with energy and the character designs are instantly memorable. The world of Despicable Me feels unique blending a cartoony style with a high tech supervillain aesthetic that makes Gru’s lair and gadgets look awesome. The action sequences are also really fun giving the movie a great mix of comedy and adventure. One of the things that makes Despicable Me stand out is how well it balances humor with genuine emotion. It is packed with laugh out loud moments from Gru’s sarcastic one liners to the Minions’ ridiculous antics but at the same time the movie knows when to slow down and hit you with some heartfelt moments. By the end you are just as invested in the characters as you are in the comedy. The pacing is perfect with no slow moments or filler. Every scene either moves the story forward or delivers a funny or emotional moment. The soundtrack is also great with music that fits the tone perfectly and makes everything even more fun. Even after all these years Despicable Me still holds up as one of the best animated movies of its time. It is funny creative and filled with so much charm that you cannot help but love it. Whether you are watching it for the first time or revisiting it the movie never loses its magic. This is the kind of movie that makes you laugh smile and feel good from start to finish. It is a true animated classic that I will never get tired of watching. I absolutely love Despicable Me and it will always be one of my favorites.
