This was rather disappointing. The editing and narrative felt very choppy and scenes didn’t really flow together. Kills were not very imaginative and happen mostly off screen. Add in some of the cringe components (rape fantasy, pervy director and his casting couch-esque audition/competition) — make this not all that great of a watch. Things I loved — that mask is one of the creepiest masks I’ve ever seen. It’s really stupid, but I loved the cheesy Curtain wipe/transition. 😆 Why was that not used on every transition? Thought the score was pretty good too. The skating scene and the dance scene were both well done, too. Between this and May December, I’m not having much luck with films in which method acting is a major component. Glad to have watched it, just didn’t quite live up to expectations. Seemed like a ripe concept for a slasher.

It's never a good sign when a director takes their name off a project.

In many ways, this film is a classic who-done-it slasher. However, there are absurd elements that simultaneously make no sense while making the seemingly straightforward film into something special.

The acting talent is stellar for this kind of movie.

Has some amazing moments even it doesn't add up to much, and there is a reason that scenes like a murder on ice have become more iconic than the film itself.

One of the tiny handful of genuinely unique one-offs in the slasher genre's history.

It's a mess, but an entertaining one thanks to Ciupka's visual ambition and ensemble work from the oddball cast, who deliver the proper level of hysteria to assist what little suspense remains.

On the positive side, there's Vernon and Eggar even being in the film. I enjoy these veteran actors and wish they had more to do. You can also argue the killer's mask is pretty scary. And, at least, the ice skating murder is original.

The closer one peers into the weird and macabre pleasures of "Curtains," the more its technical mastery and subtextual implications reveal themselves.
