- ርልዪረFebruary 23, 2025When I first heard/read that this movie existed I thought now Hollywood has just gone too far--a western with aliens! But then I thought about THE UNIVERSE a bit and my brain kicked me in the butt and asked me "why not"? If we purveyors of movies are willing to view movies such as "E.T." and "Close Encounters ..." and suspend common sense and say "Yea, that could happen these days" what is so implausible that if other species from other galaxies could get to Earth in 1975 why not 1875 or 1000 BCE? Those time spans are trivial to a species that has figured out travel across light years and if you suspend belief enough to allow that travel across light years is achievable then why wouldn't if be possible for Aristotle to have been visited by aliens. We are after all only talking about something around 2400 Earth years. So the presence of aliens in the late 1800's is no less likely than in 1950 or 2021. Now of course the story wrapped around the aliens dropping into late epoch of the US settlement of the West is another matter. This is not a great western movie-The Magnificent 7 it is not, but it is acceptable as a movie of humans coming together to fight aliens. I rated it a 4 but really it should probably be 3.5. I am willing to fudge the extra 0.5 star for the concept that there is no time limit on when interstellar species might get to our little out of the way planet. What does always befuddle me is the default assumption that species who have sophisticated enough science to have achieved sophisticated interstellar travel are always evil and destructive. Wouldn't you think that the level of sophistication and knowledge and species cooperation necessary to develop and perfect interstellar travel would breed hatred and viciousness out of the species. I like to think that by the time we start sending human beings beyond our solar system that we will be a planet of beings focused on the same goals and not still trying to destroy our neighbors for trivial reasons such as skin color, ancestry or religious ideas. Maybe we humans can't do that and therefore us cowboys will just have to wait until those aliens show up.
