Case 39 Ratings & Reviews

With the cast-listings the film boasts, one would have expected reasonable box-office success, however as an earlier reviewer pointed out the film attracted little interest and in fact bombed. The film, a phycological horror-movie tells of how social-worker Emily Jenkins ( Renée Zellweger) despite a heavy work-load is handed a case telling of troubled 10 year-old Lillith "Lily" Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) worrying decline.to investigate. Immediately when meeting Lily's parents Emily has concerns suspecting abuse. Emily had given Lily her phone number when a call is received Emily contacts Detective and friend Mike Baron (Ian McShane) to help her at Lily's home, finding a horrific situation and after a struggle with the 10 year-olds parents the child is rescued. With the parents arrested, finding Lily a placement a priority, however, Lily insists she wants to live with Emily, which at first Emily stands back from, however she changes her mind and is granted custody. Initially, things seem to be going well, however, not for long, strange things begin to happen around Emily, one of her case subjects murders his parents. Then, unexplainably Emily's best friend Dr Douglas J Ames (Bradley Cooper) who had been doing a psychiatric evaluation on young Lilly dies Emily begins to realise there is something not right about her charge, she'll even consult with Lily's parents who had been sent down, certified as insane. Very soon, Emily herself feels threatened by Lillith, she needs to make it stop, but, how? Must admit, I did not expect the film to be as creepy as it turned out to be. Certainly, a film worthy of viewing if you like a chiller.

Almost identical to 2009's Orphan, Case 39 does little keep your attention as its riddled with cliches--menacing music, domino casualties, and predictable horror plotline.
We Got This Covered

Despite its initial premise showing promise, Case 39 turns out to be boring, predictable and nothing new.
Examiner.com
Jeff Beck
While it's able to pull you in at some points with its eerie mood, it needed a lot more originality and better scares than the cheap kind of just having things pop up out of nowhere.

[A] dumb thriller.

...a decent little horror flick...

Not only is Case 39 deplorable and morally off-center, the film is dull to boot.

What starts out as slight and fairly obvious turns into a frequently colorful horror tale.

...we get a couple of moments of genuine suspense combined with a whole lot of cheap thrills.

What do you do with a crummy horror movie that has been sitting on the shelf for a couple, or maybe three, years?

... before the movie is half over, the usual cliches take over ...

Its time to put the nail in the otherworldly evil child genre until someone comes up with something original. The only thing supernatural about Case 39 is its ungodly presence on this planet.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
Neither so awful as to be enjoyable nor eerily artful enough to be anything other than a snoozy also-ran.
Boston Globe

It's a bummer when the audience is smarter than the protagonist.
New York Times
Jeannette Catsoulis
By the time the killings start, it's clear that Ray Wright's screenplay is more interested in following formula than in breaking new ground.

The devil made them do it, but that doesn't mean you have to see it.
Slant Magazine
Rob Humanick
This supernaturally tinged tale only goes skin-deep and is proud of it, wasting little time in establishing narrative basics and getting to the good stuff.
Entertainment Weekly
Chris Nashawaty
An aggressively inept demon-seed chiller starring a bunch of grown-ups who should've known better.
Los Angeles Times
Robert Abele
[Plays] like one more piece of multiplex in-box clutter, ready for the circular file in our moviegoing consciousness.

Brian Tallerico
Miscast, poorly-directed, and just-plain boring, Case 39 never clicks into place.
