“California Straight Ahead!” puts John Wayne behind the wheel instead of in the saddle, trading six-shooters for gear-jamming in this Depression-era melodrama about industry, ambition, and personal integrity. The plot is paper-thin, the romance barely sketched, and the villainy mild at best. It moves fast and plays broad, making for a passable diversion—but ultimately, it’s a minor entry in Wayne’s filmography, more of a footnote than a feature.
