Blood Machines Ratings & Reviews
Hipster ZOMBIE
February 21, 2025
Imagine watching Star Wars during an intense acid trip, that pretty much sums up Blood Machines. Directed by Seth Ickerman, Blood Machines is a pulsating synthwave-infused sci-fi spectacle that feels like a love letter to 1980s cyberpunk aesthetics and retro-futuristic space operas. As a sequel to the music video Turbo Killer (created in collaboration with synthwave artist Carpenter Brut), the film expands on the mysterious universe with a story that is more about mood and atmosphere than traditional narrative coherence. The plot follows two space hunters tracking down an escaped AI that manifests as a naked spectral woman, but the narrative remains deliberately cryptic and minimalistic. Dialogue is sparse, and exposition is virtually nonexistent, leaving much open to interpretation. Composer Carpenter Brut’s score is almost a character itself throughout the film and will stay with you long after the credits roll. Catch it now on Shudder.
The Lens

None of it makes much sense, but Ickerman is infinitely less interested in narrative coherence than in the psychedelic visuals and throbbing techno score.
Bloody Disgusting

A stunning work of art that loudly and colorfully marks the arrival of a new visionary in Seth Ickerman.

Simply put, Blood Machines will melt your face off.

That it's all shot with an obvious male gaze can often undermine [its feminist] themes too, but it is gorgeous just the same.

More traditionally-minded viewers might not be able to stop themselves from asking... whether there's a more conventional framework for these visuals, one that will make the story and the emotions as compelling as the effects.

Want to see something truly unique? Want to see a lesbian orgy/dance number being psychically manipulated as a means of controlling a fleet of neon nightmare starships in deep space?

Blood Machines is an acid trip. Take Star Wars and baptize it in the blood of Mandy, then hand whatever is left to a retro-'80s nostalgic, and you have this low-budget trip of a movie you need to see.

Love it or hate it, Ickerman creates an audio-visual tsunami that obliterates your senses.

If Nicholas Winding Refn directed a big-budget Heavy Metal movie, it might look something like this.
Cinema Crazed

A visually brilliant science fiction tale that successfully destroys pigeonholes and doesn't fit in one genre.

Eye for Film
Jennie Kermode
It is at once a sprawling mess of a film and an evocative piece of genre art which might work as well as a video installation as it does in the cinema.
Film Inquiry
Bree Duwyn
Overall, Blood Machines produces a fast-paced animated comic book style display of a fascinating concept. Hypnotic aliens and space travel overlaying a myriad of colours and cosmic sounds? Count me in.
