⭐ – Black Swan – Critically acclaimed, personally baffling. This is one of those films where I seem to be standing on the opposite side of the fence from almost everyone else. I didn't enjoy it. I can't even point to a single thing that ruined it for me. It simply never struck a chord. The whole experience felt less like I was being drawn into a story and more like I was persevering through something that everyone else insisted was brilliant. What's particularly strange is that on paper, this should have been a film I enjoyed. At the time I first watched it, I was in my twenties, and the cast featured actresses I already liked and whose performances were receiving enormous praise. The film was generating huge amounts of discussion, awards buzz, and critical acclaim. Everything suggested this should have been a winner. Instead, I found myself disconnected from it almost from the start. I remember a lot of attention at the time being focused on the more provocative aspects of the film, and for many viewers that seemed to become the primary talking point. But once all the discussion and hype faded away, I was left with a movie that simply didn't resonate with me. The biggest problem is that when the credits rolled, I genuinely wasn't sure what I was supposed to take away from it. I know there are themes and messages buried in there. Plenty of people have written essays explaining them. But for whatever reason, they never landed with me. If I can't connect with the story, the characters, or the message, there's not much left for me to hold onto. The only reason I still keep it in my collection is because so many people whose opinions I respect consider it a masterpiece. Maybe one day I'll revisit it and discover what everyone else sees. But for now, it's one of the rare films where I can acknowledge the acclaim while still feeling absolutely nothing. 🍷 An expensive vintage wine that everyone at the table raves about while you're quietly wondering if your taste buds are broken.

The unfulfilled ambitions of an overbearing mother cause her completely dominated daughter, who is on the verge of incapacitation, to develop an obsession and schizophrenia, including self-harm, leading to the destruction of her personality.

A psychological thriller that fully leans into the psychological, blurring reality and delusion in a way that’s both mesmerizing and deeply unsettling. Natalie Portman delivers one of the all-time greatest performances—absolutely haunting and transformative.
