Big Momma's House 2 Ratings & Reviews
- Manuel Frangis7d agoI just watched Big Momma’s House 2 and I give it 4 out of 5 stars. This sequel is still a lot of fun and brings back the same crazy energy from the first movie, but with a slightly different vibe. It is more family friendly and leans into the comedy more than the crime and action, which works for the most part. It is not as strong as the original, but it is still a solid follow up and definitely entertaining. Martin Lawrence is back again as Malcolm Turner, and once again that means Big Momma is on another undercover mission. This time, Malcolm is going deep into family territory by posing as a nanny to investigate a case involving national security. It is a weird setup, but it leads to a bunch of funny moments and awkward situations that keep the movie moving. The biggest change in this one is the tone. While the first movie had more of a detective and thriller feel mixed with comedy, this sequel plays more like a PG comedy about an undercover babysitter. Big Momma trying to handle the kids, attend school events, and stay in character while doing spy work is chaotic in all the right ways. The comedy is more toned down, but still funny. There are a bunch of scenes where Martin Lawrence has to think fast, keep the disguise together, and juggle everything at once. The physical comedy is still solid and there are a few jokes that got me to laugh out loud. It is definitely goofy, but that is the point. The kids in the family bring a lot of personality to the story. One is into tech and hacking, one is a moody teenager, and the youngest is just full of energy and always causing problems. Watching Big Momma try to win them over and deal with all their issues makes for some really funny and sweet moments. What surprised me is how much heart this movie has. Even though the main plot is silly and filled with disguises and sneaking around, the bond that starts to grow between Big Momma and the kids feels genuine. There are some emotional beats that work well, especially when Malcolm starts to realize how much he actually cares about the family. The pacing is decent, but a few parts do feel slower than they need to be. Some of the spy stuff is not that interesting, and a few scenes go on longer than they should. The mystery part of the movie is not as engaging as in the first one, and it mostly takes a back seat to the comedy and the family story. That is part of why I give it 4 out of 5 instead of a higher score. It is still a fun time, but it does not hit quite as hard or feel as sharp as the original. The comedy is safer, the plot is more basic, and it could have used a little more energy in some spots. Still, Big Momma’s House 2 is a fun, silly comedy with enough laughs and heart to make it worth watching. Martin Lawrence is hilarious as always, and the undercover nanny setup gives him plenty of chances to shine. I had a good time with it and would definitely watch it again when I need something light and funny.
