A streak of light appears on the horizon when Marie meets Tommy Weber, who suffers from asthma. Tommy's father, the widowed doctor Hans Weber, spontaneously hired the "fairy godmother" as a nanny. With the lucrative extra income, Marie may be able to avert the impending foreclosure. As the good spirit of the house, she has a positive influence on Tommy's illness and quickly wins the affections of his rebellious sister Lena as well. Marie soon finds out that, in addition to her mother's death, another dark shadow weighs on the family's happiness: Hans Weber has rejected his son André because he preferred to become a circus clown instead of studying medicine like his father. In an attempt to bring the divided family together, Marie tells her stubborn father what she thinks - and is promptly fired. When she also loses the money that her neighbor Hermann advanced her to cover the bank debt, things look very bleak.
