Behind the Candelabra Ratings & Reviews

Having been a fan of Liberace, I had to get this as I was,nt sure if Michael Douglas could pull it off. Having seen the man himself, I was amazed at how accurate he got it. Brilliant performance from Matt Damon as well. A definite must see.

The sheen and editing prowess displayed at will throughout every scene and frame made it easier to swallow the glimmer of depth that was teased and yet not fully realized in this film. Soderbergh weaves and swirls the camera around like a shrewd investigator picking up every last drop of detail to fill the atmosphere of every scene. The pacing and editing are also stellar. There's never a long lull in the action of the plot and the somewhat rampant scene and time changes flow in a seamless fashion. Soderbergh captures the unabashed gawdy opulence of Liberace's lifestyle in a way that's both enthralling and horrifying. The film exhibits an emotional range from darkly humorous to weighty drama and everything in between but never stagnates in one area. Matt Damon does an amazing job of portraying a character that's both been used and abused and also an an abuser and user. Both and he and Michael Douglas are given the space to convey both true romantic love and true vehement toxicity. It ends on a beautiful albeit somewhat unearned positive note, which encapsulates my only minor gripe of the film. Sometimes it feels like Soderbergh's knack for making the most entertaining choices might be a blessing and a curse as it feels like some of the emotional weight was left on the table so to speak in this film. Nonetheless, there's something about the way the film is able to gloss over its spurts of ugliness and sadness for the sake of the show that harkens back to the Golden-era classics.
Los Angeles Times
Mary McNamara
Soderbergh is clearly captivated, as are we all, by the rot underlying the glitz, but even with Douglas' nuanced performance, the film simplifies too many things.
AV Club
Emily St. James
The story is told less as a cause-and-effect narrative than as a collection of incidents that add up to something with a crushing emotional weight.
USA Today
Robert Bianco
Buffed to a typical HBO high gloss, Candelabra is a visual feast. It shines brightest in those moments where it captures the rhythms of a relationship in its first blush of affection and its seemingly inevitable collapse.

Balancing the borderline insane personality of Liberace with the intimate truth of the story told in Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candleabra... is this remarkable film's greatest strength.
The Dissolve
Noel Murray
Soderbergh and LaGravenese go deep beneath this voyeuristic fascination with wealth, fame, and the secret lives of celebrities.
Slant Magazine
Chris Cabin
Thematic kin to Clint Eastwood's terrific J. Edgar, Behind the Candelabra is powerful, funny, and emotionally rigorous, and though it might act as a fiery and forceful resignation, it also serves as an uncommonly heartfelt Dear John letter.

Although Behind the Candelabra may be Soderbergh's swan song, it's an uncanny resurrection of the creature that was Liberace.
Film Comment Magazine
Amy Taubin
As fabulous as it should be and not a jot more or less.
The Atlantic
Jon Frosch
Witty, briskly paced and consistently entertaining.
Denver Post
Joanne Ostrow
The stunning and quite intimate performances by Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are award-worthy.
Philadelphia Inquirer
David Hiltbrand
This is one of the strangest and strongest TV movies in memory.
Washington Post
Hank Stuever
The story as told is just too depressing, too empty and, most of all, too dead and gone.
New York Magazine/Vulture
Matt Zoller Seitz
Whether the biopic Behind the Candelabra ends up being a swan song for director Steven Soderbergh or merely the last entry in one phase of a long career, it's an impressive work.
The New Republic
David Thomson
Douglas is more than acceptable, but Damon has made an unforgettable character. Scott Thorson is unknown and he comes out of the dark as the story that needs to be told.
Paste Magazine
Tim Grierson
Love stories haven't been a big focus in his [Soderbergh] work. But, if it is his final movie, it's worth noting that this is one of his warmest.
New York Post
Linda Stasi
Douglas manages to take a real-life cartoon character and make him into a sometimes kind, often cruel, real person.
Wall Street Journal
Nancy DeWolf Smith
The glitter and kitsch, and jaw-dropping performances by Michael Douglas as the middle-age Liberace and Matt Damon as his much younger boy-toy Scott Thorson, make this a wild ride without compare.

It's rare that I hate an HBO movie, but it's been a long time since I loved one. Until now.
