Beautiful Creatures Ratings & Reviews
- ርልዪረMarch 5, 2025Not a bad film at all...sort of Southern gothic romance between a gee shucks southern boy (who reads the odd bit of Vonnegut and Bukowski) and a witchipoo from the family that owns the town. All the witches seem to be either heaving bosomed vamps or OTT bouff-haired pantomime dames (unless they're vampiresque gents). They tried to keep them apart but true love and all that. A coming of age / shall I choose thelight or the dark kinda thing. Lots of thunder and lightning. Woulda liked a bit more witchery.
- CallumDecember 29, 2025⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Beautiful Creatures – Southern gothic romance with a dark streak. This is a better film than its reputation suggests, blending young-adult romance with a distinctly Southern gothic atmosphere. At its centre is a quietly thoughtful Southern boy — bookish, introspective, and out of step with his surroundings — who finds himself drawn to a girl from a powerful local family with a long, supernatural history. The world-building leans heavily into mood: decaying mansions, small-town secrets, and a sense that something old and dangerous sits just beneath the surface. The supernatural elements are stylised and theatrical rather than subtle, and while the film occasionally leans into excess, it largely embraces that heightened tone instead of fighting it. Structurally, it follows familiar coming-of-age territory. There’s a looming choice between light and dark, family expectation versus personal agency, and the idea that love can disrupt even the most rigid traditions. Thunder, storms, and fate all feature prominently, sometimes more symbolically than narratively, but they help sell the gothic flavour. I would have liked a little more emphasis on the supernatural mechanics — more magic, more consequence — but what’s here is engaging enough to carry the story. While it’s undeniably aimed at a younger audience, it’s an easy and enjoyable watch, and the setting alone gives it a personality many YA adaptations lack. 🍵 Sweet iced tea on a humid evening — atmospheric, indulgent, and quietly satisfying once you settle into it.
- wipeout630October 19, 2025Sure it's young adult, but it's an easy watch and a good time. The story is just different enough to make it fun.
