⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Beastly – An old fairy tale in modern clothes. This is a straightforward modern retelling, dressed up with a contemporary setting and a cast that’s a bit bigger than you might expect for this kind of story. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and that’s very much by design. Rather than radically changing the bones of the classic tale, it sticks closely to what already works and simply modernises the details. The themes, the lessons, and the emotional beats are all familiar — just filtered through a present-day lens. For some, that might feel safe, but for me it works because it knows its limits. The performances are solid, and the film carries a sincerity that stops it feeling cynical or overly glossy. It’s earnest in a way that’s easy to appreciate, especially if you’re already fond of the original story. It’s not trying to be clever or subversive. It’s content to be a modern fairy tale, and judged on those terms, it does exactly what it sets out to do. 🍵 A warm cup of tea — familiar, comforting, and quietly satisfying.
