It kept me on the edge of my seat. The shark looked super real, which made the scenes more believable.

A must-watch for shark-movie lovers! The story is engaging from start to finish, and the characters feel very realistic. I especially liked how the soldier faced his fears and trauma, ultimately saving himself and his friend. Overall, a superb movie!”

Surprised at how watchable this was. Also glad to learn the sharks aren’t racist. 6 bits of floatation for your safety out of 10

If you’ve ever watched a survival-at-sea movie and immediately started placing bets on who makes it out alive — and what desperate MacGyver-style stunt they’ll pull to do it — Beast of War delivers exactly that kind of salty suspense. The opening basic-training scenes with the grunts are unexpectedly fun, setting up the camaraderie before everything goes sideways, and I was especially glad to discover Mark Coles Smith, who brings plenty of charisma and quiet toughness to the chaos. The premise isn’t exactly reinventing the life raft, but the film knows what it is and rides the wave anyway, mixing tension with just enough swagger to keep things entertaining. Predictable? Sure. Enjoyable? Also yes — sometimes all you really need is open water, bad odds, and someone yelling survival ideas that definitely weren’t covered in training.

Based very loosely on a true story, the film strands Australian soldiers in the Timor Sea—enemy waters, zero rescue, less-than-zero hope. They’re hiding from the Japanese, dying of thirst, and oh yeah… being stalked by a massive, ravenous female great white shark that treats traumatized soldiers like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Pick your poison: starvation, exposure, or becoming chum. The horror hits hard because it’s grounded in real wartime desperation before unleashing full-on shark-movie brutality. It’s tense, sweaty, and unapologetically gory, with kills that are mean, messy, and wildly effective. The shark isn’t just a monster—it’s inevitability with teeth. Not to say the soldiers are just there to be canon fodder though, the film does a good job of setting each of the surviving soldiers as likeable characters who you actually give a shit about before the shark starts chomping down on them. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Is it intense, savage, and wildly entertaining? Even more so. Beast of Man is historical horror with bite, and it absolutely knows how to rip you apart one soldier at a time.

    Boring B-movie

This was a solid shark thriller. Set during WWII, it follows new recruits from Australia who end up getting stranded after an ocean bombing. A great white shark is terrorizing them, and there are plenty of gory attacks to be had.

My quick rating - 5.7/10. Beast of War opens in 1942 with some basic training-camp setup, complete with nurses who clearly wandered in from another film entirely. After about 19 minutes of bonding, banter, and establishing that Leo (Mark Coles Smith) is our main guy, everyone gets unceremoniously punted into the Timor Sea when their ship is attacked. I will say that the period at least looks convincing. From there, it’s eight soggy soldiers balancing on a makeshift raft, surrounded by fog, bullets from enemy planes above, and one extremely motivated great white shark below. Not a metaphorical one. A literal “I'm going to breach dramatically every ten minutes like I’m auditioning for my own spin-off” shark. Half the movie is just this thing popping up like it’s trying to figure out its best camera angle. Credit where it’s due — the camerawork is solid. A lot of shots sit right at water level or just beneath it, which does a great job of keeping your stomach clenched. The effects are surprisingly convincing, too. When the shark hits, it hits. Even when it’s bordering on aquatic self-parody, it still looks mean enough to ruin anyone’s swim. Given this comes from Kiah Roache-Turner — the guy behind the insanely inventive Wyrmwood films — I was hoping for a wilder take. Instead, it plays things pretty straight. No zombie sharks. No improvised spearguns made from human femurs. Just a classically structured survival thriller. It’s familiar. Maybe too familiar. There’s nothing here you haven’t seen in Jaws, Open Water, or every Discovery Channel Docudrama at 8 pm. Still, familiar doesn’t always mean boring. The acting’s solid across the board. The tension works. The pacing keeps things tight enough. Roache-Turner was also able to find a way to inject other predators aside from the shark. The worst of all, Humans. And I’ll give them props for the ending — let’s just say someone gives a hand in a way I didn’t see coming. Overall, it's enjoyable enough shark warfare, but if Bruce the Shark took fewer selfies, I could’ve believed it more. A decent float, but not quite a bite.
