The mother's unhappiness is to be the daughter's unhappiness." My first Ingmar Bergman film! The performances by both Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann are phenomenal. The constrained nature of the story felt like this could have been a stage play. The dialogue felt so authentic, like I was really watching a daughter struggle with both love and resentment toward a mother who was being confronted by her choices. It’s a masterclass in psychological cinema and like I said I'm not familiar with Bergman's work but his visual style felt very unique. Just like Scenes From a Marriage which was adapted a few years ago into a miniseries, I would love to see a couple of modern actresses tackle this one!
