- Jacob O’NealApril 15, 2026I’m not going to defend my love of this movie or its subsequent sequels. If you have watched them and enjoy them, great. But they’re not for everyone. I grew up with a father who found movies like this hilarious. It rubbed off. As an adult this film has many jokes I never got when I was a kid. Here’s an example - there was a Japanese scientist who was explaining what was happing to a group of officials. He waved his arms around and knocked a photo off the wall, where it landed in a fish tank, thereby sinking the photo. That was all I understood as a child. But now I get the whole joke. The picture was of the aircraft carrier, USS Arizona, the first ship sank by the Japanese in Pearl Harbor. The movie is full of little jokes like that, smarter than thy should be in a movie full of stupid and over the top jokes. It’s pretty obvious what the movie is about - killer tomatoes. The legacy of this film is crazy. There were three sequels to this film and a Saturday morning cartoon. I will go to my grave as a lover of this DIY movie from the 70’s. If anyone who has never seen it watches it, I hope to see it the way I do.

- flavo43December 10, 2025Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) is a notorious oddity in the world of cult cinema. While some films achieve the “so bad it’s good” status, this one largely misses the mark, relying on extreme silliness, nonexistent writing, and painfully weak acting. The absurd premise—killer tomatoes terrorizing humanity—never quite develops into anything more than a string of ridiculous gags. Yet, despite its flaws, the sheer absurdity occasionally provokes genuine laughter, as the film leans into its own incompetence with reckless abandon. It’s this very lack of polish that helped it earn cult classic status, embraced by audiences who revel in its campy charm. The low-budget effects and nonsensical plot make it hard to take seriously, but its theme song remains oddly memorable, sticking with viewers long after the credits roll. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is far from good, but undeniably unforgettable.
