Argentina, 1985 Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward
July 3, 2025
I managed to squeeze in my very last Oscar film the morning before the actual ceremony. Really great courtroom drama that felt very much akin ton A Few Good Men and Trial of the Chicago 7. I started watching a couple times with the Amazon english dub, but the dub was not great. (Granted, I’m not a big fan of dubs anyways). I’m glad I found the time to watch the subbed version though. Dialogue is very well written and the performances, particularly Ricardo Darin as lead prosecutor, was engrossing. Really good watch even if it didn’t take home the Oscar.

Stephanie Bunbury
It doesn't only draw a line under the dictatorship, claiming Argentina for democracy, although it does that too. Above all, it is a bold declaration of the rights of human beings everywhere. It is also brilliant cinema.

A film that will charm you, movie you, enlighten you, and remind you that it's never too late to fight for memoria, libertad y justicia.

I was frequently reminded of the long-running television drama Law & Order because of the characters and how it runs like a police procedural-only the stakes are much greater.

Don't be surprised to find yourself laughing throughout this insanity too. It's a necessity once we begin to hear from the victims and understand just what sort of atrocities were being committed. The subject matter would be too much to bear without it.

An engaging piece of storytelling with more than a few unsavory parallels to modern-day abuses of power and cruelty. Some histories don't feel like history at all.

Argentina, 1985 is also a gripping thriller with well-written characters and excellent performances.

Director Santiago Mitre takes a non-fussy docudrama approach and it's the right move.
The New Yorker

Though the dramatic atmosphere could hardly be denser, it's also pierced by surprising shafts of comedy; there is courage to be had, Mitre reminds us, in preserving a lightness of heart.
New York Times
Natalia Winkelman
Like a pair of old wingtips polished with wax, "Argentina, 1985" spins a notable piece of history into an impassioned courtroom drama flecked with quaint humor.
Los Angeles Times
Michael Ordoña
Apart from the moving testimonies of surviving victims, the movie's power comes from the desperate needs for justice and to prevent this authoritarian, terrorist scourge from ever taking hold again.
Cocalecas
Ruben Peralta Rigaud
Argentina, 1985 is first-class entertainment cinema that achieves the difficult balancing act of being thrilling, exciting, and even quite funny, without subtracting its importance. [Full review in Spanish]

Unfortunately, Mitre strangely seems to be playing it safe, using tropes so familiar the film feels more appropriately suited for a television miniseries treatment.
The Hollywood Reporter
Sheri Linden
An instructive and thoughtful depiction of what it takes to hold tyrants accountable within the perimeters of a legal system, the persistence and paperwork and fearlessness required to achieve justice.

Rather like the arc of the moral universe, "Argentina, 1985" is long, but bends toward justice.
IndieWire
Sophie Monks Kaufman
An entertaining biopic about recent Argentine history that takes the baton from Shakespeare's idea that "some men have greatness thrust upon them."
