- BurnharmAugust 25, 2026All About Eve is one of those classics that I somehow had never seen, and I'm glad I finally did. What surprised me most is how simple the story actually is an ambitious young actress gets close to an established star and slowly reveals her true intentions. On paper, it doesn't sound like something that should still feel this relevant decades later. But the simplicity of the story is exactly what makes the execution so impressive. The writing is sharp, the dialogue is fantastic, and the cast is simply stellar. Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter all bring something different to the film, and the acting is exceptional throughout. What I particularly appreciate is how much the film gets out of its characters and their relationships without needing a complicated story. Beneath the theatre setting, it's really about ambition, jealousy, ageing, ego and the fear of being replaced. And despite being over 70 years old, those themes still feel remarkably familiar. I can understand now why All About Eve has such a strong reputation. It's a classic that doesn't need an elaborate concept to be great—it just needs an excellent script and an extraordinary cast.

Clearly the blueprint for almost an entire genre of films (at the least, a genre-spanning trope/dynamic) so the importance cannot be overstated. Just insanely influential Goddamn Addison is a creep
