- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025The AI putting in the emoji movie for entertainment is all the torture needed for a horror movie. It’s a shame that this movie is so half baked it waste the talented actors it has on the cast
- KentJanuary 24, 2025This is a chilling exploration of artificial intelligence that resonates deeply in our current era of technological immersion. The film arrives at a time when AI's potential future holds both promise and fear. While the narrative takes a positive turn towards the end, suggesting a hopeful outlook for AI, it doesn't shy away from the unsettling notion that compliance is imposed on the protagonists. Although I wanted to enjoy it more, the movie had its moments of surprise but ultimately felt predictable. The only other film that has instilled a similar sense of fear in me is the Sci-Fi thriller "Life" (2017), which presented a believable threat from an unknown life form.
- ScottDecember 14, 2024I wanted to like this. The idea of an artificial cryptid composed of the worst of humanity is such a fun idea. Or even just a haunted house of our own making. But both of those ideas give way to a most of the movie happening offscreen and what we’re given is not even particularly important to the movie.
- SpoonsNovember 3, 2024Afraid follows a marketing professional who gets his hands on cutting-edge AI technology for a demonstration, aiming to prove his agency’s worth. The plot unfolds as he becomes increasingly entangled in the dark capabilities of the AI, blurring the line between control and chaos. While the concept of AI-driven anxiety is timely, the execution feels more like a standard thriller than a chilling horror film. Despite its intriguing premise, the movie falls into a pattern of predictability, with performances and direction reminiscent of made-for-TV thrillers. The AI-created video content adds a visually interesting layer, blurring reality and fabrication. However, the lack of genuine scares or tension keeps it from reaching its potential. Afraid is an average watch, best suited for a mindless evening. Fans of light thrillers or technology-themed narratives may find some appeal here. It might interest those who enjoyed films like The Circle or Anon but with tempered expectations.
