⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Adventures in Babysitting — Chaos, confidence, and a city that never waits The funny thing about this version is that it really shouldn’t work as well as it does. Remakes of beloved ’80s films usually trip over nostalgia, either leaning too hard on it or running from it entirely. Adventures in Babysitting somehow sidesteps both problems and lands on its feet — largely because it understands what made the original work in the first place, then updates the energy rather than the plot beats. Sabrina Carpenter is the heart of this film, and she’s far more capable than people tend to give her credit for. She plays competence under pressure extremely well — not smug, not perfect, just determined and adaptable. What I really like is that this version leans harder into mutual responsibility. The kids aren’t just baggage to be hauled through the night; they contribute, make mistakes, step up, and sometimes surprise you. It feels less like one exhausted babysitter dragging chaos behind her and more like a small, mismatched team figuring things out together. Tonally, it’s brighter and faster than the original, but not hollow. The city is still dangerous enough to matter without tipping into menace, and the escalation of events feels organic rather than forced. This version also does a better job of letting its female characters exist as competent individuals without turning it into a “statement”. They support each other, challenge each other, and grow — and the film never pauses to congratulate itself for doing so. Does it replace the original? No. But it doesn’t need to. It earns its place by being its own thing — modern, energetic, and surprisingly rewatchable. I still can’t fully articulate why this story resonates with me so much across both versions, but maybe that’s the point. Some films just hit a nerve you didn’t know was there. 🥤 Pairing: A late-night energy drink — sweet, a little reckless, and exactly what keeps you going when the night gets longer than planned.
