- Dan S TurpinFebruary 4, 2025Wonderful character work from all- especially John Travolta who hasn't given a decent performance since PRIMARY COLORS. The film dives into the Southern gothic vibe, with lots of drinking, smoking, sweating, and regretting. At its core, it's a redemption story soaked in alcohol, Southern literature, and the free-spirited, bohemian haze of New Orleans. The film carries the same worn-down charm as the city itself, a place long associated with lost-cause romanticism, faded grandeur and redemption. While the premise—drunken writers, hope on the horizon, healing from the past—may feel a bit familiar, the movie remains engaging and undeniably charming. It’s easy to be drawn in by its wandering spirit and melancholy appeal. And if nothing else, the characters have a way with words—a rare pleasure that makes any shortcomings easy to overlook. It's a bit shameful it was ignored at awards season.
