- CallumNovember 8, 2025⭐⭐ – A Christmas Carol (2018) – All Humbug, No Heart The 2018 take on A Christmas Carol tries to give Dickens’ classic a darker, moodier tone — and while that ambition is admirable, it ends up stripping away much of the warmth and redemption that make the story timeless. What should feel haunting and hopeful in equal measure instead comes across as relentlessly bleak, like a winter night that never quite finds its dawn. Bonnie Wright and Stuart Brennan both give earnest performances, and there’s no doubt they’re doing their best with what they’ve been given. The problem lies in the tone — it’s all gloom and shadow, with very little of the emotional lift that makes Scrooge’s transformation resonate. By the time the credits roll, you’re not filled with Christmas spirit; you’re just relieved it’s over. Visually, it’s serviceable but unremarkable, and the pacing feels heavier than it should for such a well-worn tale. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol as a story of renewal — a light in the darkness — but this version seems content to leave us in the cold. It’s one of those adaptations you want to like because of the cast, but it never quite earns a place beside the better ones. To borrow from the story itself, this is one Christmas guest you won’t be inviting back. 🥀 Pairing: A mug of cold cocoa — dark, flat, and missing the sweetness that makes the season worth celebrating.
