American cops should be like this, but unfortunately they aren’t... I’ve never seen a series that is as black-and-white as this one. The ‘good guys’ are portrayed in such an unnaturally perfect way, while the ‘bad guys’ are made out to be unbelievably evil. At the beginning, the first few seasons were still somewhat entertaining, but by now it’s just boring because there’s always a happy ending — or it turns into a wokeness-cringe overload. This series definitely cured my FOMO because it’s the first one I actually quit. That’s what the half star is for.

I love the rookie. I didn’t know I was gonna be so addicted to it for a very long time. It’s mostly my favourite show. I ever watched every single day and I hope one day I can meet the rookie cast that’s one of my most dreams to ever do and I live so far away from them I live in Canada and they live in USA. I really wish I could go and visit them. I love the rookie so much it has changed me through the toughest moments and helped me

Is it the show of the year? No. But it’s a great binge watch with likable characters and realistic situations, sometimes happening so often that it starts to feel a little unlikely overall. Still, I really enjoyed it. The characters grow meaningfully between seasons, and the world around them evolves in a natural, organic way. Highly recommended!

It's a police procedural. Like its contemporaries, you may find it difficult to ignore how it's the same 6 beat cops getting in massive gunfights every week. The storytelling is slightly more nuanced sometimes, and while it does occasionally dare to approach being critical toward some police practices, it pulls back pretty quickly. We in the biz call this "cop slop". It definitely does not reinvent the genre, but Fillion is great as usual and the rest of the cast is a good accompaniment. It's another cheap margarita show: fun to consume, maybe to poke fun at a bit, but probably not going to measurably improve your life. All that said, still definitely has its place and everyone could use a margarita every now and then.

The Rookie is a police procedural that succeeds not by reinventing the genre, but by giving it heart, humor, and an unusually relatable point of view. Centered on John Nolan, a forty‑something man who uproots his life to become the LAPD’s oldest rookie, the series immediately stands out with a premise rooted in second chances and personal reinvention. What could have been a gimmick instead becomes the emotional backbone of a long‑running and surprisingly resonant show. Nathan Fillion is the show’s greatest asset. His portrayal of Nolan balances optimism, vulnerability, and quiet determination, making the character both believable and deeply likable. Fillion’s natural charm carries the series early on, but The Rookie quickly grows into a true ensemble drama. The relationships between rookies and their training officers—especially the tough‑but‑principled Tim Bradford and the driven Lucy Chen—give the show its rhythm and emotional stakes. What truly elevates The Rookie is its tone. The series blends action, drama, and humor with ease, often shifting from tense street encounters to character‑driven moments without losing momentum. While firmly grounded in procedural storytelling, it also takes time to explore the personal lives, moral dilemmas, and evolving careers of its characters. Over time, the show becomes less about a single rookie and more about the many ways people serve, struggle, and grow within law enforcement. Like many long‑running network dramas, The Rookie isn’t without its uneven stretches. Some storylines lean into heightened drama or familiar tropes, and later seasons occasionally favor spectacle over subtlety. However, the series consistently rebounds by focusing on character growth and relationships—its greatest strengths. Ultimately, The Rookie endures because it understands its appeal. It’s hopeful without being naïve, dramatic without being cynical, and entertaining without losing its humanity. Anchored by a charismatic lead and supported by a diverse, evolving cast, The Rookie has earned its place as one of the most enjoyable and accessible police dramas of the past decade.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½ – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (out of 5) If Blue Lights is Warhammer 40K with badges, then The Rookie is what happens when someone paints the grimdark universe pastel and hands everyone emotional support doughnuts. This is a very American show — not in a bad way, but in that “everything’s going to be OK by the time the credits roll” sort of optimism that could single-handedly power the Los Angeles grid. Even when bullets fly and lives fall apart, there’s an almost magical certainty that someone will crack a smile, deliver a life-affirming speech, and the background music will cue up a “we’re all in this together” vibe. It’s the TV equivalent of a golden retriever: loyal, heroic, occasionally ridiculous, but always ready to make you feel better about the world. In a landscape where Blue Lights is busy punching existential dread in the face, The Rookie shows up with cupcakes and says, “Hey, maybe we can talk this out.” You could say Blue Lights is a trench fight under a rain-soaked sky, while The Rookie is a sunny-day parade with good coffee and a morale boost. Both belong in your watchlist — just don’t expect them to inhabit the same galaxy.
